Year 1 Play in the Past Incursion

This semester in Year 1, we have been learning about life in the past and the way in which toys, technology, communication and transport has changed. This culminated in a fabulous History incursion on Thursday 8 June. The rain could not dampen our excitement as we headed to the College Sports Centre where Nicola from Play in the Past had beautifully displayed a myriad of interesting antique items.
First, we explored the different telephones she had brought, placing them on a physical timeline in order from oldest to newest and discussing the similarities and differences between each telephone. We looked at and learnt about 'curly cords', rotary dials and aerials. We also discovered that you could not go into another room while talking on the phone – the whole household would know if you were ordering pizza for dinner!
Next, it was time for our favourite thing… play! In small groups, we were able to discover, touch and play with the many vintage items around the room. There was a home corner where we could role-play with dress-ups and homewares from the olden days. Another station piqued our imagination as we could pretend to be in an olden-day school with a vintage desk and chalkboard. Floppy disks, VCRs, typewriters, camcorders and other such retro technology items were explored at another station. It was quite special for the teachers too as they could listen to Walkman players and cassette tapes of their youth! Finally, we played with toys from the olden days, including a beautiful vintage toy pram. Many of these toys, books and games were made of metal or wood and it was fun discovering what olden-day children enjoyed playing with.
In our class discussions after the incursion, we agreed it had been the second-best day of school ever (our Walk to the Movies day is, of course, firmly in top place). Some of our favourite items included the dress-ups, the typewriter and the rotary phone. We will enjoy reflecting on this experience in the next few weeks as it has been so helpful in strengthening our vocabulary, understanding and interest in History. Thank you to Nicola from Play in the Past, our lovely parent helpers and our school for making this incursion possible. It really was a blast from the past!

Recently, our Year 9 Media students attended an excursion to Whiteman Park to film on location. Students created original storyboards that incorporate a range of suspense filming techniques studied in class. The Year 9s came prepared with props and costumes and had a highly productive day.
For some of these students, it was their first time filming on location. The class thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I look forward to watching their final productions.

The students and teachers of Lake Joondalup Baptist College would like to sincerely thank Dr Paul V Jansz for his generous donation of 40 high-quality posters to the Science Department.
This is a very significant gift, and these exceptional posters cover a range of Science areas, including Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Human Anatomy, Geology and Astronomy. They apply to and will benefit students from Years 7-12.
The posters will enhance student learning and be a valued resource in our classrooms and teaching programs. They will also be a reminder of the character strength of kindness that Dr Paul Jansz has shown in supporting young people's learning in our community.
We are so appreciative of his thoughtfulness in blessing the College in this way.
We thank you for your support, Dr Jansz!
With gratitude,

As part of their preparation for the upcoming Future Problem Solving competition, our Year 9 and Year 10 Aspire classes were recently given the opportunity to hear from Artificial Intelligence specialist, Tom Bennett, about the limitless potential for AI to revolutionise the workforce of the future. Our students loved this opportunity. Here's what some of them had to say:
Tom's presentation was really educational and interesting because it connected with us, as students. It wasn't just him talking at us; it felt like he was talking with us and engaging with us on our level. The content he covered about AI was really in-depth, and he made it relatable to our own lives, which I loved (Siobhan, Year 10 student).
Tom explained everything well. AI is a really complex topic but he explained it in a way that was so easy to understand and wasn't just an overload of information. His charisma was great - he made sure we engaged in the conversation and was very non-judgemental. I am so grateful Tom came and spent his time with us (Robyn, Year 10 student).

Over the last few months, twenty four students have been vying for the chess medallions in the Junior Chess and the Open Chess annual competitions. After a round-robin series, the finals were held with two new champions arising, one from Year 8 and the other from Year 9. Thank you to all the students who participated, had fun and enjoyed the challenges.
