Science Week

This week, our secondary students are celebrating Science Week, an annual celebration of Science and Technology. Our aim is to encourage an interest in Science and increase awareness of the fascinating world we live in.

This year our theme is Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability. The theme aims to explore the importance of Science and innovation in ensuring the survival of different species in our ever-changing world.

Students have been:

  • Learning about endangered species, focusing on the Tasmanian Devil and the Devil facial tumour disease, which is affecting this species.
  • Assisting in online identification in the South Coast Threatened Fauna and Recovery Project, which will contribute to conservation measures for Gilbert’s Potoroo and the Western Ground Parrot.
  • Analysing the impact of global warming on the formation of animal proteins and the impact of heat and pH on enzymes.
  • Examining how scientists can learn information about whale health from their snot.
  • Testing the effect of electrostatic force with the Van de Graaff generator - a hair-raising investigation!

Thank you to students and staff for your participation and enthusiasm in highlighting the importance of Science in our lives.
