From the Curriculum Team

Subject and Course Selections:

Its that time of year and all students who are going into Year 9 through to Year 12 in 2021 have been busy selecting their subjects and courses. Please be aware that some of those conversations about prerequisites are happening and work toward those will continue. If you are in Year 11 or 12 for 2021 and have not met those prerequisites and still working to get into those courses, please ensure you have registered with the Curriculum Office.

Year 7- 9

We have now passed the mid way point of the year and well into the Second Semester. With so much happening around the College with Production and sporting events, it is time to ensure you have checked with teachers to confirm you are up to date with assessments and class work. It is easy to step away from a study plan that may have worked earlier in the year- now is the time to re-establish your homework/study routine. We also have access to a new after school club on Mondays- Study Skills Club. This is a place to learn new ways of study to not only learn new information in the class but to master your learning with ideas and tools to take away each meeting to use in class the very next day. Check it out on Mondays after school in room SL2 where Mr Nel will greet you with interesting study tips and skills!

Year 10-12

Senior students find Term 3 busy and full speed ahead with assessments and wrapping up the Academic year activities. For Year 10, students have made those course selections for Year 11 2021 and are now working toward finishing the year positive with their academics. Year 11 students are realizing that Year 12 is on the horizon and now is the time to ensure they keep on top of exams coming up to ensure their success moving forward into 2021. Year 12 have only weeks to go until they either finish up their studies or move into Exam preparation- depending on their chosen pathway; either way, an excellent finish to Year 12.

Instructing with Intention

Teachers work at the College with Collaborative learning and Independent learning in the classroom. Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, both professors of educational leadership and teachers of middle school have completed extensive work with instructing with Intention. It is from this educational model that teachers at LJBC work with our students to ensure they not only have focused instruction but guided instruction to ensure they are able to become independent learners through a series of instruction that allows for gradual release of responsibility in their learning. All students work toward academic growth with scaffolding support from their teachers through the phases of learning. Through an assessment system of both formative and summative, teachers have the ability to understand the level of each student. Through feedback that also gives intervention, students can reach success and make progress in their learning.
