The Have Sum Fun Competition is an exciting mathematics initiative that uses a quiz night format. Teams of six students race against the clock to solve four intense rounds of eight challenging problems. Teams can only have a maximum of three students in the team.

This year, the Junior and Intermediate competitions were held on Friday 23 October at Woodvale Secondary College (Year 9 and 10 team) and at Aranmore Catholic College (Year 7 and 8 team). We had 12 enthusiastic maths students partake in the annual. Our students displayed excellent team spirit and were very keen to compete against the best schools in the North Metro area. They employed some excellent strategies and their problem-solving skills were in top form. Although our teams did not place they finished the evening in very creditable positions.

The Year 9 and 10 team consisted if:

Year 10 – Jacques, Jake, Dylan

Year 9 – Nicole, Gabrielle, Daniel

The Year 7 and 8 Team consisted of:

Year 8 – Jess , Jordan, Benjamin

Year 7 – Emma, Lachlan, Sean

Prior to the 'Have Sum Fun' evening competition, past questions were worked on by the teams at school in preparation for the event.

Thanks to Mrs van Leen and Mr Nguyen who so graciously gave up their time to not only train these students for the competition, but also for supervising them on the night. Thanks also to all team members for their contributions.

One of our Year 7 team members, Emma, had the following to say about the competition: “It was really fun, actually. I'm glad I went!” which goes to show that learning Maths can be fun.

We will celebrate the teams’ efforts with Krispy Kreme donuts and we look forward to next year’s competition.
