Parents & Collegians Auxiliary (PCA)

“We’re all working together; that’s the secret.” Sam Walton

 #Class of 2019!

It is difficult to comprehend that our littlies are all grown up and in their final year of school. The PCA reached out to the Class of 2019, by handing out Kit-Kats with a “Class of 2019” wrapper. In addition, each Year 12 student received a reusable water bottle with their name on it. Future Year 12 classes can look forward to this annual tradition.

Job Readiness Event

Our job readiness workshop held in October 2018 was very well received by all attendees. We have incorporated all suggestions, to further improve this popular workshop. Please book your seat here https://www.trybooking.com/BAWYX

Interview with Collegian Nicola Yeung, designer of the national costume for Miss Australia for the Miss Universe finale!

  1. In which field are you currently working?

I currently work at the Rusty Surfboards Head Office in their Design/Production/Merchandising Department as the Women’s Denim Designer and a Design Assistant for their other fashion categories.

  1. How did you reach your decision to study your chosen field?

It was definitely tricky! I remember being in year 10 and feeling as though my whole career was weighing on which subjects I chose! Thankfully I had been encouraged to take part in art and fashion activities and had done fairly well, so that gave me a bit of direction. So eventually that’s what I chose – I wasn’t 100% sure and I knew it was a risky career choice, but prayed about it and knew that God would guide my steps. Since then I have had the right doors open for me and faced many obstacles too, but they have led to great opportunities.

  1. What is your favourite LJBC memory?

Year 11 Geography Camp was a real highlight for me, I had a lot of fun! The Year 11 and 12 Balls were also great. I know most people don’t enjoy high school, but I am fortunate enough to say that I absolutely loved those years! I had a good group of friends who I still call my closest friends to this day.

  1. If you could give advice to current students, what would that be?

I am a very cliché person, so this is easy for me! I would say: Embrace it, whatever is happening. Life happens in seasons and you will get through. Just try your best – if you can fly then fly, if you can walk then walk, if you can only crawl then crawl! (that’s an abridged version of a Martin Luther King Jr. quote, by the way) But just do your best, that’s all anyone can ask, and God will do the rest. God has an amazing plan and purpose for your life. And you can learn something from every situation and every person.

  1. You designed the national costume for Miss Australia for the Miss Universe finale. Please tell us more?

Yes – so in previous years the position to design Miss Australia’s national costume was pretty coveted for the amount of exposure the designer would get. Usually people would submit their designs, make them, and then present them to the public - then a vote would select the winning design for the finale. So when the role was offered to me and I didn’t have to compete for it, I was very surprised! I’m not entirely sure why this was the case, but I had worked hard in the past to make sure I had a good portfolio of work just in case, which must have helped!

So I did some research and sketched a few designs for the event managers. They ended up choosing a dress inspired by our native Australian flora. Designing is definitely the easiest and most enjoyable part for me, the rest can be quite challenging! As there are a lot of steps involved in making a garment, it took me about 2 months working on it (while also working full time and volunteering) and a few all-nighters to complete it. It was worth all the effort though, especially seeing it on TV and being released in the paper.

  1. Have you won any awards or scholarships since leaving LJBC?

I graduated from LJBC in 2007 and went to Curtin University and finished my degree in Fashion and Textile Design (2011). I participated in a few student fashion events that I was fortunate enough to be selected for during that time. I then worked for a few years in a field related to sewing, but not quite in the field of fashion. So in 2015 I went to TAFE to brush up on my practical skills. Here I entered student competitions again and in 2016 won the Costume category of Perth Fashion Festival, as well as being selected to showcase at the closing night alongside some of Perth’s most well- known designers.

  1. Are you currently volunteering or serving in another capacity?

I serve in the Children’s Program at church and lead a Women’s BSF bible study group. I’ll also get to travel to India in December to volunteer, which will be an eye opening experience!

  1. If you could change one thing in the world, what would that be?

I think people in poverty and uncared for children upset me the most. So if I had a magic wand to immediately change something, it would be that.

  1. Do you have any special interests or hobbies?

I like to try a variety of things just to get a taster (like skating, piano, archery) – does that count? I also like to draw, bake, or play guitar if I get time. And travel – travelling is great.

  1. Please share your favourite quote.

Oh, there are far too many to choose! I really like “Before the reward there must be labor. You plant before you harvest”- Ralph Ransom.
I also like “What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world is and remains immortal”- Albert Pine.
“The warrior considers opposition from the enemy as a sign they are going in the right direction”- Lisa Bevere.
“We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that death will tremble to take us”- Charles Bukowski. Sorry, I couldn’t choose!

But I think what has encouraged and brought me comfort in my most uncertain, lost and difficult seasons are the next few verses: Jeremiah 29:11, Deuteronomy 31:6, Philippians 4:13 and 2 Corinthians 4:18.
