This month on SchoolTV - Screen Time

As a result of the global pandemic, there has been a noticeable shift in the amount of time people spend on screen-based devices. Families are transitioning back to pre-COVID routines, but many are still struggling to re-establish the boundaries and rules around screen use. Some continue to deal with digital conflict and tech-tantrums on a daily basis. The latest research found that 77% of teenagers spend more than five hours on screens per day, but it is important to note that not all screen time is considered equal.
Parents play a crucial role in modelling a positive and healthy approach to using screens and assisting children to navigate the content they watch. It is better to model and mentor screen use, rather than monitor it. Children tend to do more of what they see us do, and less of what we tell them to do. However, it is still important to outline the risks and highlight the benefits of screen use to ensure you keep a balanced attitude. Encourage discussions around the issues that people experience in monitoring their screen time and be honest about your own difficulties.
Parents need to remain firm in their approach to managing screen time. Excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s overall wellbeing. Ensuring the correct privacy settings are in place is vital to prevent children from being inadvertently exposed to inappropriate content or online predators. Parents need to also be mindful of the potential impact screen time can have on a child’s social, emotional, educational, behavioural, and even physical domains.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents/legal guardians will be provided with a range of guidelines and strategies to help manage screen time at home. We hope you can take some time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition,
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact your child’s Head of House or one of the Chaplains here at the College.

Debating students Cara, Abigail, Chantal, and Tayte won their second debate this week. They were up against Hale and were debating in favour of the optimisation of nutrition in foods.
The girls worked so hard to take on feedback from the last debate and they wrote excellent arguments.
We are so proud of their excellent efforts.

The McGowan Government has relaunched the Premier’s Reading Challenge, encouraging young Western Australians to read. To complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge, students will need to read a total of 12 books and log these books on the Premier’s Reading Challenge website. Weekly prizes are also on offer, with students going into the draw by logging a book per week.
Students can get involved by registering at www.premiersreadingchallenge.wa.edu.au. Those students below 13 years of age need to be registered by a parent or guardian. Those students over 13 years of age can register themselves. As part of the registration, students will choose their avatar and be able to log books that they have read.
For secondary students involved in our College Reading Achievement Scheme, you will be able to include all items read from May onwards. Mr Sampson and Ms Di Florio will assist students to complete and submit the required reading record.
Challenge categories and prize information (including travel prizes!!) are on the website. The Challenge is open to students from Kindergarten to Year 10. The Challenge will run until 9 September.

Mothers Days Stall
Our excited young students were very thankful that the Mothers Days Stall went ahead and they could purchase gifts for their Mum or significant person.
The children had a great time selecting the presents and were presented with some new gift ideas this time which were well received.
A big thank you to the P&F team, including Deidre Gunasegaram, for all her hard work potting and looking after the pot plants and Tania Richter, Caimi Dearden, Nicole Harrison, Charmaine Reay, Sarah Wood and Michelle Rizza for their help setting up and running the stall.
We hope all the Mum’s had a wonderful day and enjoyed their presents.
Fundraiser with Cinnayum
In Term 1, P&F ran a Fundraiser with Cinnayum, selling boxes of delicious Cinnamon Scrolls. Thank you to everyone who purchased a box or more. We hope you enjoyed them.
We sold 184 boxes in total and raised $890, which will go towards future events/activities for the children. Thank you to everyone for their support.

Last term the Year 11 and 12 Drama students participated in a performance incursion in PAT.
The Year 12 ATAR students performed scenes from Zen Zen Zo’s The Tempest which showed off their talents in physical theatre, singing and musical instruments.
Year 11 ATAR and 12 General students performed scenes from Impending Everyone which showcased their skills in realism through the theme of private versus public identity.
The audience, including teachers, were very impressed with the high level of student performance.
