Subject and Course Selections:
Its that time of year and all students who are going into Year 9 through to Year 12 in 2021 have been busy selecting their subjects and courses. Please be aware that some of those conversations about prerequisites are happening and work toward those will continue. If you are in Year 11 or 12 for 2021 and have not met those prerequisites and still working to get into those courses, please ensure you have registered with the Curriculum Office.
Year 7- 9
We have now passed the mid way point of the year and well into the Second Semester. With so much happening around the College with Production and sporting events, it is time to ensure you have checked with teachers to confirm you are up to date with assessments and class work. It is easy to step away from a study plan that may have worked earlier in the year- now is the time to re-establish your homework/study routine. We also have access to a new after school club on Mondays- Study Skills Club. This is a place to learn new ways of study to not only learn new information in the class but to master your learning with ideas and tools to take away each meeting to use in class the very next day. Check it out on Mondays after school in room SL2 where Mr Nel will greet you with interesting study tips and skills!
Year 10-12
Senior students find Term 3 busy and full speed ahead with assessments and wrapping up the Academic year activities. For Year 10, students have made those course selections for Year 11 2021 and are now working toward finishing the year positive with their academics. Year 11 students are realizing that Year 12 is on the horizon and now is the time to ensure they keep on top of exams coming up to ensure their success moving forward into 2021. Year 12 have only weeks to go until they either finish up their studies or move into Exam preparation- depending on their chosen pathway; either way, an excellent finish to Year 12.
Instructing with Intention
Teachers work at the College with Collaborative learning and Independent learning in the classroom. Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, both professors of educational leadership and teachers of middle school have completed extensive work with instructing with Intention. It is from this educational model that teachers at LJBC work with our students to ensure they not only have focused instruction but guided instruction to ensure they are able to become independent learners through a series of instruction that allows for gradual release of responsibility in their learning. All students work toward academic growth with scaffolding support from their teachers through the phases of learning. Through an assessment system of both formative and summative, teachers have the ability to understand the level of each student. Through feedback that also gives intervention, students can reach success and make progress in their learning.

LJBC excelling with another ‘CAN DO’ effort

Before COVID-19, food insecurity was a daily reality for tens of thousands of West Australians. The pandemic has now disrupted every aspect of our lives and a growing number of people have found themselves in a situation where they are unable to afford enough food to eat, placing extra strain on Foodbank WA to meet the current demands.
This year, James House, Cumberland House and Arcadia House once again decided to support the Foodbank, driving a Secondary School can-drive and selling brownies and nachos at breaktimes. In total, the students brought in 911 non-perishable cans PLUS, raised $2185 to donate - what a fantastic testimony to the LJBC community's giving nature.
A shout-out to the following Connect classes, 7A (99 cans), 8A (94 cans) and 8J2 (72 cans), for raising the most cans. A special thanks also to the James, Cumberland and Arcadia Student Councillors who drove this campaign and proved that “wherever there is a human in need, there is an opportunity for kindness and to make a difference”.
Thank you to every student and staff member who supported this very important and worthy cause!

During week 4 we celebrated Languages Week in the College. Connect classes made origami paper planes and French chatter boxes. In our Japanese Language classes Year 7 and 8 students learnt about Sadako’s story and we made paper cranes which are a symbol of peace. Year 9-12 students enjoyed making Japanese hot cakes and watching some Japanese anime. French classes enjoyed some croissants and French cultural activities.

This term in our Primary Co-Curricular, we have a STEM focus. One of the co-curricular activities that is running is a Lego Challenge Club. Each week, students will be presented with challenges to solve using Lego. We would like to say a big thank you to Luciel Kruger (on behalf of the P&F), Julie Read and Michelle Douglas who generously donated Lego to the Primary school to use. These donations will be well-used and well-loved for a very long time.

Year 11 and 12 Subject Selection 2021
Our current Year 10 and 11 students have selected their Pathways and subjects for next year. We are in the process of meeting individually with each student to ensure they are aware of the requirements of their chosen Pathway and to answer any questions they may have. It is a delight to meet with these students and hear of their aspirations and interests. We have also had valuable discussions regarding the balance required between study, paid and volunteer work and Netflix! We request that any questions regarding subject choices for 2021 be directed to the Curriculum office.

“You don’t have to have your life journey mapped out by the end of Year 12. Trust the process, give everything your best go, embrace all your mistakes and learn from them, and enjoy the ride because possibilities are endless when you work hard.” Dr Lauren Kuhl, past student from the Class of 2008.

Parents/Legal Guardians - would you like a little support?
We all know that parenting is a wonderful thing, but at times it can also be stressful, exhausting and not much fun. A few months ago, I added a Wellbeing Support Links icon on the College parent portal of SEQTA which lists several agencies that may be of assistance to you. In these challenging times when children are presenting as stressed, a Free Talk for Parents of Sensitive and Anxious Children is available, which may be of interest to you.
If you have any concerns regarding your child’s wellbeing, both the Primary and Secondary Pastoral Care staff are also here to support you, as such, please feel free to contact us.
