Dear families
As the season changes, and we conclude our first term in 2022, we reflect on what has been, and look forward to what is to come in Term 2, especially to reconvening planned events and meeting more as a community in person. We extend our heartfelt thanks to you all for your support this term as we have navigated through changing sets of guidelines and operating protocols.
With Easter coming in the middle of the holiday break, students have been reminded this week to reflect on the importance of the Easter message. While we might separate the Easter and Christmas celebrations, we know that the gift in our Christian tradition is the same, the resurrection message of hope and of God’s great love for all. My prayer for our community is that we will know this great love and that as a community, we will always and actively reflect this out into our wider community, in our participation, and in our concern and care for others.
Staff
In the Secondary school, during Term 1 we welcomed Mr Hiep Nguyen as Technologies teacher.
Mr Mark Downsborough, Dean of Administration will be on long service leave in Term 2 and Mr Limpie van Aswegen will be acting Dean of Administration. Mr Lyndon Rice will be acting Secondary Manager Learning Technologies. Mrs Santie Brink, Head of Arcadia House will be on Long Service Leave too and we welcome Mrs Kendall Sallery to the role of Acting Head of Arcadia House, and Mrs Bernadette Lhota to the Acting Head of Windsor House role to relieve Mr Rice. Mrs Esbe Maree from the Secondary Curriculum Office will be on Long Service Leave in Term 2, and we thank Mrs Helen Fox from our Secondary Attendance Team for stepping in to support the Curriculum team during Mrs Maree’s leave.
In Primary School, we welcomed Ms Rebecca Clayton (Class of 2013) who has been appointed as the teacher for Year 6.1. Mrs Angelina Ryan will be on Long Service Leave in Term 2 and 3. Sadly, Primary Teaching and Learning Leader Mrs Christina Roodt, who is currently on Leave, will not return to the College. We thank Mrs Roodt for her wonderful contribution to the Primary community and will miss her. Mrs Belinda van der Walt, Primary Education Assistant, will also be leaving us, and we also thank her for her long-standing contribution to the College. For Term 2, we will welcome Ms Carrie Thornton as Primary Health & Physical Education teacher.
We wish all our students a wonderful Easter break, and pray that they return for Term 2 feeling refreshed and ready to go. While summer seemed to pass faster than some might hope, the weather is wonderful, and Perth, in April is a beautiful place to be, so some outside time for the mind, body and soul is encouraged for our young people. We continue to hold those who are affected by COVID in our thoughts and prayers.

Thank you to the wonderful students who participated in our ‘We Love Our School’ video. We hope this Student-led video tour of our Secondary College will give you an introduction to some of our students and a glimpse into what makes LJBC a uniquely inclusive and welcoming environment.

The Chaplaincy Department put together a student-led team to present some music for our students at lunchtime this week. Dylan, Benjamin, Jake, Amiya and Matthew served the College Community with some worship songs to celebrate Easter. Thank you to everyone involved for a meaningful music session.

The Starlight Foundation aims to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families. For a number of years now Batavia and Arcadia Houses have supported the foundation through our annual Starlight Day event, which this year was held on Thursday of week 10. As with so many things, we had to change the day somewhat to make sure the event was as Covid-safe as possible – with a real team effort from Student Councillors and Connect teachers, we had fantastic support and participation for this worthy cause. Students were able to go uniform free for a donation, order a sausage sizzle and drink and make guesses as to how many jellybeans were in the jars in the hope of winning it for themselves. Congratulations to Weylin in 10B and Charis in 9W, who won the jars with the closest guesses. The day was a great success and I am proud to say resulted in a total of $1400.70 raised to support the Starlight Foundation. Well done everyone and thanks for your contribution!

On Friday 8 April, in celebration of the last day of term, the Year 12 Hospitality students showed their thanks to the school staff by making homemade hot cross buns and hot coffees. The students began preparing the hot cross buns from scratch throughout the week. On the day, they hand-delivered the buns to all of the departments. Staff were able to come to the Technologies building and order a free coffee, which was made efficiently by the students. This was greatly enjoyed by LJBC staff.
“Please pass on the Library’s thanks for the delicious hot cross buns (and the wonderful hot chocolate I had this morning). A huge effort and a wonderful morning tea.”
“Hands down THE BEST hot cross bun EVER ?
“The coffee was amazing too (as always)”
“Thank you, thank you to all those who have contributed.”
Overall, it was a wonderful and successful day that both the staff and hospitality students enjoyed and a great way to finish off term 1 of 2022.

Some extra kind students in Primary have been putting together mini-joy-packages to give to students who may need a bit of cheering up.
This fantastic initiative will see students recieve a mini-joy-package, delivered straight to their classroom.
If there is a student who may benefit from a little extra TLC, please let me know so they can be included.

Every year the Advanced Music Class completes an Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) theory examination. We are very proud to honour two music students who have achieved outstanding results.
Thomas and Sofia, currently in Year 9, both obtained 100% in their exams.
AMEB has instituted a prestigious set of awards: Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Students have to complete practical examinations, theory examinations, perform at three public events at school and complete community work. These students must display leadership and have exemplary behaviour records.
I am very proud to announce two students have achieved a Bronze award: Elisabeth in Year 10 and Xander in Year 6.
Well done to all these students.

A group of Year 7 girls and myself enjoyed a fun time of stretching, mindfulness, a positive thought and scripture for the day on Thursday 31 March before school. This was our first session of two, and the girls were very eager for more sessions! The delicious smoothies were quickly devoured, many thanks to Mrs Jackson (T&E Teacher) and her Year 12 students for preparing these for us.

Due to restrictions, the ACC Swimming Carnival was run in year groups in 2022. Each affiliated school was able to enter a restricted number of competitors from each year group, provided they met the qualifying times set by the ACC.
Unfortunately, due to the restricted competitor numbers and qualifying times, many students who would usually have been selected for the Inter-School team were unable to attend the event. Qualifying times were taken from the Inter-House Carnival and other club events for students who were unable to swim on the day.
Students selected for the team represented the College with pride and achieved some outstanding results, which saw LJBC finish 4th in the boys, 10th in the girls and 7th out of 37 schools overall.
Congratulations to the following swimmers who achieved All Star nominations for their performances at the Inter-School carnivals:
Year 12 Tom received 6 nominations for each individual event and the 4 x 50m relay. Tom also won overall Champion Boy which is an amazing effort and will receive ACC Letters at the Sport Awards Evening.
Year 11 Georgia received 2 nominations for 50m breaststroke and 4 x 50m relay and 3rd place overall.
Year 10 Ethan received 2 nominations for 50m freestyle and 4 x 50m relay.
Year 7 Freya 50m breaststroke.
Shoutouts to Ethan in Year 12 and Daisy in Year 7 who finished 5th in their age groups.
The LJBC sporting community are super proud of our students’ achievements. We understand the dedication and commitment required to accomplish these results against some of the best swimmers in the state and encourage you to continue to train hard for future events.
LJBC will compete in the ACC B Division Carnival in 2023, provided all restrictions are lifted and we are looking forward to our athletes continuing to excel at this carnival.

We are so proud of our year 8 debating team for winning their first ever debate against Christchurch Grammar School. These students have been working so hard for the past month to hone their teamwork, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. It was such a great way to kick off the debating season.

With the school holidays on our doorstep and students having more time on their hands, I thought it fitting to write a reminder on how to keep children safe online. A recent New York Times report ‘highlights a 17 percent increase in screen use among teens and tweens in the last two years — more than in the four years prior’
The internet is having an increasing influence on the social development of our children and how they interact with each other. Social media, smart phones, smart watches and other technologies provide children with wonderful opportunities to learn, be creative and socialise.
However, just as with face-to-face interactions, sometimes bullying and harassment can occur online. Being online is often a positive and fulfilling experience for children. Content can be posted instantaneously, but the downfall is that children can potentially post messages without thinking about future ramifications. Once it’s online, it is there forever.
Importantly, just like in the real world, not everyone is a friend. While people can use apps, websites, chat rooms and other online tools to send positive messages, compliments and congratulatory messages, others can use the technology to send nasty and inappropriate messages to each other. (Know which social media (apps or websites) your child uses. Create your own social media accounts and add your child as a friend/follower.)
Most technology features have positives and negatives. Location services are a good example of this. On one hand, location services can be a useful way to monitor your child’s phone location – there are GPS tracking apps that can be installed for this purpose if desired. But social media location services can broadcast your child’s physical location to the world.
You may want to introduce a communal charging station at home where devices are placed at the end of the day to avoid late night use of devices in bedrooms.
Be Proactive
Encourage your child to be open with you about being online. Often, the fear of losing access to social media is why children are hesitant about talking with their parents/legal guardians about online issues. Teach them how to take a screen shot on their device, so they can capture evidence of cyberbullying/inappropriate use.
Take a proactive approach and establish clear and agreed rules for internet use. This may include, at any given moment, your child hand you their device for you to view. Establishing a clear agreement with your child ensures you all understand the rules/arrangements for use.
If your child thinks they are being bullied, or encounters offensive online content, encourage them to find someone they feel safe talking to, such as yourself, a relative, a teacher or a trusted adult. Parents/Legal Guardians can help their child ignore, report and block the other person. Encourage your child to never bully back. Promote positive bystander behaviour. Work with your child ahead of time to come up with safe ways to stand up to any online abuse they may witness. Remember, if you wouldn't say it out loud or in front of an adult, don't say it online.
When your child connects their device to the school network, the filtering system protects them from inappropriate websites. To help protect your child when they return to your home internet connection, it is recommended you install some level of internet filtering.
With regards to any online bullying/harassment etc between students at the College, the College can only investigate the incident if it causes disharmony on campus and cannot be held responsible for the actions of students after hours.
The fastest and easiest way to remove online content is to ask the person responsible to remove it. If you don’t know who the person responsible is, or if they refuse to delete it, you can report the content to the social media administrators for review and possible removal. Below I have included some useful links should the need arise

Road Safety Reminder Around the College
- Please take care when driving around our school and observe the 40km/h limit for the safety of all children.
- Take extra care when approaching children’s crossing locations. When the orange Children Crossing flags are displayed, the crossing is in operation, and all drivers should be prepared to stop.
- When you see the warden entering the road, prepare to stop your vehicle at the stop line before the crossing.
- Please do not stop over the crossing line as this is unsafe and does not allow for the safe passage of students using the crossing.
- Remain stationary until all pedestrians and the warden have safely returned to the kerb.
- Do not overtake any other vehicle stopped at a Controlled Children’s Crossing.
- Be aware of the line of traffic turning onto Joondalup Drive as this can cause a backlog of vehicles lining up back to the crossing.
Thank you for keeping our students safe.
Secondary Students Uniform Changeover
The College winter uniform is worn in Term 2 and Term 3. A two-week changeover period occurs at the beginning of Term 2. During this time students may elect to wear the full winter or full summer uniform.
From the beginning of Week 3, all students must wear their full winter uniform. Please refer to your Student Planner for more information.
Currently uniforms may be purchased online using Flexischools (www.flexischools.com.au). Flexischools requires you to register an account before commencing with the ordering of uniforms. The online service provides sizing charts to assist you when placing your orders. Secondary students can still access the uniform shop to pick up or purchase items themselves. Primary student orders will be delivered to classrooms after 2pm on a Tuesday and Thursday.
The Uniform Shop Staff are available to speak over the phone on a Tuesday and Thursday between 8am to 4pm (closed 11.30am to 12.30pm) during the school term, for any uniform related matters.
The Uniform Shop will open to customers in week 2 of Term 2 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Withdrawal of Student Enrolment
We understand that situations change, and remind you that if there is a possibility that you may withdraw your child(ren) from the College during or at the end of 2022, our policy requires that we receive written notification of ten school weeks’ notice, addressed to College Registrar.
