Year 4: Noongar Boodja Six Seasons Djeran Kings Park excursion

Our Year 4 students had the opportunity to visit Kings Park and participate in a Noongar Boodja Six Seasons excursion. The Six Seasons program aligned with our Year 4 Hass and Science curriculums, focusing on Aboriginal Indigenous culture and environmental sustainability.
Did you know that the Djeran Season (April – May) is a time of cooler weather signified by red flowers, such as the red flowering gums and summer flames? These are some of the flowers we saw while geocaching in the Naturescape area. We also got to navigate our way through Naturescape using a map to decode Noongar symbols.
Next, students and adult helpers joined the Wadumbha Aboriginal Dance Group in learning about traditional dance, watching and joining in an interactive traditional storytelling performance, and creating their own animal moves with the Moorditj (solid) Noongar dancers.
Traditionally, foods at this time of year included freshwater fish, frogs and turtles. Our Year 4 students participated in a Kep Katitjin (Water knowledge) hands-on workshop where we learned about our local wetlands, freshwater plants and sustainable fishing sustainability practices needed to maintain our healthy bilya (rivers).
We ended our visit with nature play, including rope climbing and building Mia mias. Traditionally, Mia mias (shelters) were repaired and made waterproof in readiness for the cold wintery months ahead.
Overall, we had a fantastic excursion and learnt a lot about Aboriginal Indigenous culture and sustainability.

In Year 3, we spent time learning about the events leading up to Jesus giving His life on the cross for our sins. We learnt about why Christians celebrate Easter and how special it is that we can choose to live God’s way by being kind and helpful to others. We decided to share a bible verse and some very special Easter messages and pictures with the LJBC community.

Recently, our Year 9 and 10 Drama students attended Yirra Yaakin’s Theatre Company’s performance of Hide the Dog at the Dolphin Theatre as part of Perth Festival.
For some of these students it was their first time watching a professional show and the audience was buzzing with energy.
Following the excursion, students wrote theatre reviews commenting on the comedic characters extravagant costumes and positive messages of friendship and cultural understanding.
We look forward to seeing Year 9 and 10 class performances. The inspiration they received from seeing professional actors on the stage will be invaluable.

Michael is a Year 11 Student at Lake Joondalup Baptist College. He is completing a Certificate II in Cookery with a School-Based Traineeship at Iluka Tavern.
This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in culinary skills and knowledge, including food safety and hygiene, knife skills, recipe development, and menu planning. It is a crucial first step for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the hospitality industry.
The course has been both challenging and rewarding for Michael. He has had the opportunity to learn from experienced chefs and to work in a real-life kitchen environment. He has also learned to work under pressure and to manage his time effectively, which are essential skills for any cook.
Michael said that he is really enjoying the experience and training that he is gaining, learning new and different styles of cooking. As he already had a part time job at Iluka Tavern it is a bonus to get paid to complete a Traineeship! Michael is also putting the skills he is learning to use by helping at home with cooking from time to time.

Term 1 ended on a high as the Cadets’ skills were tested at Rockface Climbing Centre (pun intended). It didn’t take long for the Cadets to get into the swing of climbing the many varied walls as well as taking their turn at belaying each other.
During the first week of the school holidays, we had a fun, educational and hot time in Kalgoorlie.
The train ride up on Tuesday was an early rise and a new experience for the majority, and the cadets were expectant on what was lying ahead.
That evening, after settling into our dorms and enjoying our dinner, we headed off to join in the Kalgoorlie/Boulder SES training session. During the evening cadets upskilled their map reading abilities, sharpened their search skills and used their problem-solving skills to jack up a truck to save ‘Bluey’ who was trapped underneath.
Wednesday we headed out to Hannans Tourist Mine where we struck gold! (But only the minutest amount). Cadets were able to pan for gold, watch a gold pour, learn some history of the region and get a feel for the difficulty of life at the time. This was compared with the enormity of the giant trucks that were available to climb all over. A picnic lunch was enjoyed at the Chinese Reflection Garden before heading into town to do a bit more exploring. By the time we finished roller skating that evening, Cadets were ready for some sleep.
Thursday was another big morning heading out to the Super Pit. We met up with the emergency response team who set us through our paces making pully systems, dismantling cars and learning how to put out fires with the heavy truck hose. We had the opportunity to relax in the afternoon spending time at Hammond Park, a green oasis in the middle of the red dust. We were entertained that evening line dancing with the majority enjoying themselves after being ‘encouraged’ to participate. It turned out to be a lot of fun with a lot of laughs.
After a hectic week the cadets were happy to spend some quiet time on the train and weren’t overly concerned that the train was arriving back later than scheduled.
Our older Cadets are to be congratulated on receiving their Recreational Skippers Ticket at the start of this term and are excited to be able to put it to good use. The weather at Hillarys played its part to make a very enjoyable day on the water.
Our calendar has been updated on SEQTA if you are unsure of dates at any time as we look forward to another busy term.
