Welcome to Term 3
I begin by extending thanks to you all, on behalf of the College Management Team, for your patience and understanding during the challenging last week of Term 2, to the sudden onset of changes relating to the COVID-19 situation in WA. Our hope is that you were still able to enjoy the holiday break, despite the probable impact to many of your travelling plans, and that students have returned feeling refreshed and ready to embrace this term.
Our staff have returned to Term 3 with great anticipation for a term filled with opportunities and celebrations as we continue to journey with your child(ren). We have a number of changes to staff for various reasons:
At the end of Term 2, we farewelled Kim Edwards (Secondary French Teacher) and Avril Smyth (College Reception/Administration). We also learned that Maria Gutierrez (Lopez) (Secondary Humanities Teacher) will not be returning from overseas. Rachael Ramsay (Secondary Art Teacher) and Jacinta Bonner (Primary Music Teacher) have now commenced parental leave to await the arrival of a new addition to each family.
A number of staff have commenced a well-deserved long service break, including Anmar van der Westhuizen (Head of House James/Secondary English Teacher), Gillian Smith (Primary Teacher) and Cheri Pestell (Primary Teacher), and we have welcomed back from long service leave Jodie Southwell (Secondary Science Technician), Reuben Farr (Head of House Batavia) and Ingrid Murray (Primary Art Assistant), and Liz Gray from an extended period of leave. Congratulations to Ingrid Murray who returns after completing studies to qualify as a Specialist Art Teacher.
At the beginning of Term 3, we welcomed the following staff who are new to LJBC:
Laura Barker – Primary Music Teacher; Claire Kilian – Kindergarten Teacher Term 3; Kate Coetzee – Secondary English/Science Teacher (Term 3); Dhammi Azariadis – Secondary French Teacher; Anne Butler – Secondary English Teacher
The College has entered into a partnership with Direction Psychology, and we welcome Danelle Priddy who will join us on campus each Tuesday, providing professional care to students and assisting pastoral and care teams in supporting school wellbeing.
Welcome, Danelle!
Students will have noticed changes which are currently underway around the Canteen, as our talented grounds team work on an exciting project which will enhance the area and provide a ‘café’ style space. Completion is expected by September.
As is the case for every term, Term 3 is filled with events and rich offerings for our students and wider community – please keep the College Calendar close by so you don’t miss anything! We have also published the term dates for 2022, which you will find on the College Website. The website will be updated later in the term, so look out for the change.
We love to congratulate and celebrate with our students as they reach milestones, and we are proud to share news of the following students who have been selected to represent the state in a sporting discipline. The 2021 School Sport Australia Championships was cancelled due to COVID-19; however, School Sport WA selected state teams and will be endeavouring to provide a team experience that remains within the state borders, and we congratulate the following students for their selection:
State Cross Country Team: Keira
State Football (Soccer) 12 Yrs and Under Girls Team: Daisy
State Football (Soccer) 12 Yrs and Under Boys Team: Enzo, Matias, Jensen, Oskar, Zac, Sean, Luke, Levi
As our Year 12 students continue to focus on and prepare for their final months at the College, may I offer my encouragement and support to the students and their families, and I look forward to sharing time with the students and to celebrating with them as they journey towards their next chapter.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says God, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
God Bless

Congratulations to Mrs Sonja van Aswegen who recently received the 2020 inaugural Facilitator of the Year award for her contribution in providing students with opportunities to develop their 21st century skills such as complex critical thinking, creative problem solving, effective communication and collaboration.
The Creative Edge Problem Solving Challenge is an innovative educational competition providing students with motivating challenges that will develop both critical and creative thinking skills. In 2020, LJBC won both the Science and Engineering and the Society and Environment state titles and we also won the Creativity Award across all divisions.
Welcome to the Team
The Student Services Team at the College do an amazing task of supporting our students through their everyday challenges irrespective of what they are. The team is comprised of the six Heads of House and our College Chaplains. In addition, we would like to welcome Mrs Naomi de Wit who will take on the role of College Counsellor on Thursdays, as well as Mrs Danelle Priddy, Provisional Psychologist, from Directions Psychology who will be working at the College on Tuesdays to the team.
Their expertise is especially helpful in addressing the needs of students with ongoing issues and severe conditions, making sure that they thrive in the classroom setting. This team is ready to provide counselling and emotional support to students touched by tragedies and other catastrophic events that may affect students directly or indirectly. Students will be referred to these additional staff on an as needs basis in order to be given the tools and skills required to function at the College and in society.
Please feel free to contact your child’s Head of House if you require further information.

Year 6/7 CAS Football Champions
Congratulations to all the players in the Year 6 CAS Football (Soccer) teams from LJBC and Irene McCormack Catholic College who met in the Grand Final match recently. After a close game, the team from LJBC was successful, becoming the CAS Champions for 2021. Fantastic achievement boys.
Thanks to Mrs McLean, Josh and Morne for managing the team throughout the term. Your enthusiasm, leadership and contribution to this team’s success was much apprectiated.
Australian Football Representation
Congratulations to Chanel, who was recently selected in the Inaugural Associated and Catholic Colleges (ACC) Girls All Stars AFL Team 2021.
Chanel showed amazing skills and prowess on the field to fight off 80+ girls from across all ACC colleges in Western Australia, to be selected into the final squad of 23 students. Chanel was also instrumental in the West Perth Falcons securing the Rogers Cup premiership with a win against the South Fremantle Bulldogs.
The All Stars carnival will be played at Claremont Oval on Friday August 6 and the ACC All Stars team will be playing in a tri-series against School Sport WA (SSWA) and Independent school girls association (IGSSA).
A fantastic achievement. Well Done Chanel!

Year 11 Outdoor Ed Mountain Biking day trips to Kalamunda

What better way to experience the great outdoors than to eat some dust and get ‘up-close’ with the trail. Mountain biking is a great way for our students to get off the beaten path and enjoy healthy relationships, social interactions and the majesty of nature.

In the Ethics Olympiad, our students were challenged to discuss the ethics behind a range of case studies that included big issues like censorship, fast fashion, and police funding. The students from the Year 11/12 team placed first overall in the regional round and were then invited to participate in the international competition where they competed against students from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Canada. These students did a fantastic job representing LJBC and received glowing feedback from the judges. We are so proud of their incredible hard work and subsequent success.

On Monday 26 July, the Year 7s and the Year 8s informative French incursion “Why languages? Why continue French in Year 9?” took place just before 2022 subjects selections.
Dr Ronnie Gladden (from Ohio) connected virtually with our LJBC community and presented an interactive talk on WLM – Why Languages Matter.
He passionately informed students about the value and urgency for sustained language study in today’s world especially after Year 8.
The speaking session provided salient quotes, anecdotes and reference to data underscoring the relevance and importance of sustaining foreign language studies – particularly with regard to Year 7s entering Year 8 and undeniably to the Year 8 cohort. All throughout the talk, it was amazing to see how LJBC students connected with our guest speaker and were happily challenged with critical and creative questions asked by Dr Ronnie. Their individual answers highlighted their understanding on why learning and continuing to learn a foreign language is crucial and so beneficial in their professional and personal life.
Un grand merci to our students for participating so actively and making LJBC proud to have students who are eager to learn and grow with the guidance of their teachers.
Un grand merci also to our IT specialist Mr Orlowski for making the day a success thanks to his amazing IT skills and to our new French teacher’s assistance Madame Azariadis.
In the second half of the day, there was a surprise for our students. An indoor picnic with freshly made croissants to devour whilst learning about the intriguing history of the 'French' croissant.
We concluded our day by collecting feedback on what each student will take with them from their French Incursion Day.
Our thanks for your ongoing support in the value of languages.
Bien cordialement,
Madame Cobanlar and Madame Azariadis

At the start of this year, Year 11 Visual Art students were given a brief to research into plants that are native to the Joondalup area.
We discussed the inextricable links between the land, it’s uses and the first nations people that inhabited this area. We were able to utilise some of the outstanding resources the City of Joondalup has developed to begin our research.
The overall focus of this project was to create a collaborative design where all the students could contribute to a large scale mural for the College.
We have an amazing cohort of Year 11 Visual Art students this year and all of the students in this class created beautiful work and a good handful of designs were chosen to be entered into the Celebrating Joondalup, Joondalup Art Awards.
We were so very pleased that both Chanel and Georgia were awarded and highly commended for their entries.
