Sixteen students recently had the honour of attending the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast at the Crown Ballroom. This significant event brought together members of the Perth community and beyond, united in prayer for the city and its people. The students, representing both primary and secondary, joined leaders and guests in a morning of reflection and spiritual unity.
A highlight of the event was the address by Michael Raiter, a respected Christian author and theologian. He encouraged everyone present to remain faithful, emphasising the profound impact that steadfast belief can have. After breakfast, the students had the opportunity to meet the Governor. The event was a meaningful occasion for the students, offering them a chance to engage with their faith and community in a unique and powerful way.

Last week our Japanese and French language students had a cultural experience as part of our Languages Week celebrations at Lake Joondalup Baptist College.
Japanense Students participated in a cultural incursion, where they enjoyed a captivating Taiko drumming performance by Taiko On. After the presentation, students got 'hands-on' in small group workshops, where they learned the art of Taiko drumming. They also crafted hachimaki (Japanese headbands) in honour of the Olympics, embracing a key symbol of Japanese culture.
The French students put their French to good use by ordering crêpes from a native speaker who served them from a food van on campus. They then enjoyed their delicious crêpes while watching the popular award-winning French film ‘Les Choristes’. A very valuable (and yummy!) learning experience for all French students. Bon appétit!

This week, our secondary students are celebrating Science Week, an annual celebration of Science and Technology. Our aim is to encourage an interest in Science and increase awareness of the fascinating world we live in.
This year our theme is Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability. The theme aims to explore the importance of Science and innovation in ensuring the survival of different species in our ever-changing world.
Students have been:
- Learning about endangered species, focusing on the Tasmanian Devil and the Devil facial tumour disease, which is affecting this species.
- Assisting in online identification in the South Coast Threatened Fauna and Recovery Project, which will contribute to conservation measures for Gilbert’s Potoroo and the Western Ground Parrot.
- Analysing the impact of global warming on the formation of animal proteins and the impact of heat and pH on enzymes.
- Examining how scientists can learn information about whale health from their snot.
- Testing the effect of electrostatic force with the Van de Graaff generator - a hair-raising investigation!
Thank you to students and staff for your participation and enthusiasm in highlighting the importance of Science in our lives.

Celebrating Lynton Smith: A Legacy of Success

Since 2009, Lynton Smith has been integral to our college community, serving as Head of Department - Careers. From the very beginning, his dedication to student success was clear. Lynton approached his role with a genuine passion for helping students achieve their potential and envisioned a future beyond high school. He has always focused on creating opportunities for students and seeing their potential.
Lynton’s influence on our college is profound, particularly how he created a culture of opportunity. His leadership in the Careers Department has made Lake Joondalup Baptist College a place where ideas are welcomed and students are encouraged to grow. As Lynton embarks on his well-deserved retirement, we reflect on the many lives he has impacted. Our students' achievements are lasting tributes to the work Lynton has done here.

Recently, the LJ Rebels attended the ACC ISP Soccer carnival. As part of the Manchester United Competitive Pool, the team played four exciting games before moving to the final match of the day. Despite our strong defence line, the opposing team managed to score the match's only goal, resulting in the LJ Rebels coming second.
This season's most valuable player goes to Emily. Emily sets a great example of what it means to be a true team player. Her dedication to the team is inspiring. She supports the rest of the players with kindness, is flexible and open to suggestions of technique and strategy and showed excellent sportsmanship on the day. Em has attended the majority of our training sessions and makes valuable contributions to our team forum.
Please congratulate Emily and the rest of the players when you see them.

The WA Institute of Sport is participating in an Australia-wide talent search program for our next generation of Olympians. The hope is that this uncovers talent for the upcoming home Olympics in Brisbane 2032.
You may have been watching the Olympics and seen some great Aussie successes. Many of these athletes switched into these sports later in life once they found they had the attributes needed for a new activity. Programmes such as the one we are taking part in often uncover these talents, which then help them switch to new sports.
This year, they are searching for cyclists, kayakers and rowers.
WAIS are at Lake Joondalup Baptist College on the 22 August to conduct the testing.
If you feel you have what it takes or would like to know if you have the needed attributes, we welcome you to contact us and put yourself forward. These programs are designed for athletes of all levels, including those with no prior experience in any of the events.
Please nominate yourself by email to ben.allsop@ljbc.wa.edu.au
