Our Senior Girls Football team were successful at the ACC Championship Lightning Carnival earlier this term. They defeated all teams in the northern zone to make the Grand Final and played Seton Catholic College who won the southern zone.
Our team, consisting of Year 7-11 girls played really well at the day Carnival with guidance from Captain Gracie-May and our Senior Football Academy Girls. The LJBC team were on point from the kick-off, pressuring the Seton defense and kicking 3 unanswered goals in the first half.
Our defense were outstanding and held off Seton in the second half to win the match 5 nil. Most Valuable Player for the match Hannah kicked 4 goals and her fancy footwork had the Seton defense baffled.
Congratulations to all girls who contributed to the day Carnival and to our girls who represented the College with pride in the Final. We are looking forward to seeing this team excel in future years.

Congratulations to all who were involved in our Production of The Little Mermaid last week. The cast, crew and those who gave up personal time to volunteer and support - a huge thank you. In supporting this wonderful production, you have shown the quality and soul of LJBC to the students themselves and to the community at large. If you have a minute, please take the time to read this review. https://www.stagewhispers.com.au/schools/disneys-little-mermaid
On Friday 21 August the students in the Primary School celebrated Book Week with a parade in the auditorium. Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. The Book Week theme 'Curious Creatures, Wild Minds' was explored during library lessons. Students also decorated the library by filling in creature paw prints once they had finished reading a book. The paw prints roam across the library walls and ceiling, creating a great visual celebrating how many books students have enjoyed. Many wonderful books about fantasy creatures in line with the theme were read and enjoyed. The series 'Wings of Fire' by Tui Sutherland has been very popular amongst the students.
It was wonderful to see many book characters and curious creatures come to life as the students in the Primary School paraded their costumes for us all to see.

Year 12 Visual Arts General – 2020 Mural

As part of their second semester project, Year 12 Visual Art General students, together with Jerome from ‘Blank Walls’, have designed and created a mural based on Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences. The students were asked to create designs based on an intelligence and explore differences in the way each of us learn and process information. Inspired by muralist Bradly Eastman, elements of the students’ artworks were then combined into the final design, which was gridded and painted onto the Student Services wall near the House Centre. It was a great experience for the students to see the design process. Students involved include Kohl, Josie, Tineka, Alexander, Danika and Montgomery.

A very happy Fathers day goes out from the Lake Joondalup Baptist Chaplaincy Department today! We were not able to have a legendary breakfast cook up due to continued social distancing precautions however, we would still like to bless the community with a fun video. We interviewed some of our College siblings to find out what they really think about Dad...

We are excited to have been able to hold our first camp for the year at Bickley Outdoor Recreation Campsite with 40 cadets attending, and doing an amazing job. The weather held up for the most part, giving the cadets the opportunity to learn some new skills and practice some old skills. Fun was had canoeing on the dam, building catapults, climbing ropes and ladders, as well as searching for clues of the missing soldier. Singing songs around the campfire while roasting marshmallows is also a great way to end any day. The Cadets who attended should be congratulated for the way they came together and worked as a team unpacking and packing up tents as well unloading the trailer so efficiently.
This term has also seen many Cadets earn their CPR qualification, which is a credit to them, as well as having the opportunity to participate in our local SES training evening. We also have our Fire Extinguisher course to look forward to later this term.
Watch out early next term for details of our next camp when we will be heading to Moore River on 6 November.
If you have any queries relating to the Cadet program, please contact Mrs Jenny Pontarelli on 9300 744 or via email Jenny.Pontarelli@ljbc.wa.edu.au.

During Week 9, our Primary School presented the finals of our public speaking competition - LJ Speaks. On both mornings we watched incredibly talented public speakers from Years 1-6 present on topics ranging from ‘How to Look After a Puppy’ to ‘William Tell’ to ‘The Brain’. Once again, we were so impressed with the confidence and professionalism shown by our young students. Each year, the quality of our students’ public speaking improves, making the job of the judges extremely hard. In many cases, there was a matter of one or two points between first and third places. Thank you to our judges across both mornings – Mrs Roodt, Mrs de Jong, Mrs Hawkey, Mr Gaudin, Mrs Jarvis and Mr Young.

Thursday 10 September is the national ‘RU OK’ Day. To highlight this, we held a pikelet 'cook-up' for all Secondary students outside the Chaplaincy Office, asking ‘RU OK’ and handing out Lifeline cards.
'RU OK' Day is a good time to reflect on how you are travelling, and also asking those around you. Looking out for a friend, or even someone you might not know so well, and asking them the question ‘RU OK’, can be life-changing.
Some basic tips from the ‘RU OK’ website are below:
https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask
- Ask – take the time to ask someone how they are really going.
- Listen – be open to listening non-judgementally.
- Encourage action – encourage them to take the next step, ie contacting a psychologist, visiting a website like Lifeline, visiting the doctor for a free mental health plan etc.
- Check-in – check back with them again to see how they are going.
Have a great fortnight, and pray that you and yours are ‘OK’.

Author in Residence - Mark Greenwood

Author in Residence week provides our students with a framework upon which to develop writing principles, narrative techniques, and the aesthetics of storytelling. During weeks 3 and 4 we were joined by West Australian author, Mark Greenwood. Mark writes books that explore little known slices of history from the intersection of personal experiences.
During classroom workshop sessions, he aligned student-centred activities to the themes and texts currently being studied in class. Valuable lessons were learned when addressing elements such as plot, tone, and dialogue. Mark reiterated the value of picture books and visual images that speak to readers. His workshops taught us that, like music, language has resonance - a presence, evoked by words, that conjure up images, memories, and emotions.
Mark’s ‘top tips’ are - read with a writer’s eye, remain passionate, curious, determined and embrace the solitude of literature.
