“The bands were highly entertaining. They played each piece, looking like they were really enjoying their opportunity to perform.”
“Simply amazing bands”. “Performances that were both lively and personal”.
LJBC Rugby was very pleased to welcome Mr Peter Grant, formally of the South African ‘Springboks’, Cape Town ‘Stormers’ and more recently the ‘Western Force’, to our Rugby Clinic this week.
The clinic was run by Rugby WA and supported by Joondalup Brothers Rugby Club. We also welcomed back ex-students and current Joondalup Brothers senior players, George Peters and Taana-Nui Phillips, who assisted Rugby WA in the running of the clinic.

Recently, Year 7s had the opportunity to apply for these positions with voting being conducted within their House groups. Thank you to all the students who applied – your willingness to serve and lead is commendable!

Congratulations to the LJBC Swim team on winning the ACC Interschool C Division Carnival. After dedicated before school training, our swim team excelled enabling LJBC to move up to the B Division competition in 2022.
The focus of our Primary Swimming Carnival this year was optimum student engagement. Alongside the competition events, students had the opportunity to engage in fun, water-based activities that included; the Waterslide, Royal Life Saving games and Class Cup style Novelty Races. This gave all students, whatever their age or ability, the opportunity to compete at their level and in the way that suits them. The competition events continued as usual with a few too-close-to-call finishes.
Happy Easter everyone!
Once again, I am amazed at how fast Term 1 has come to an end and our students are about to enjoy their first well-earned break for the year. The Secondary students have had a successful start to the year and the Student Services Team (the Heads of House) and I remain confident that 2021 is going to be a good year.
With Term 2 being an 11 week Term, there will be a number of events happening around the College and lots of opportunities for student involvement. From a staffing perspective, I would like to share with you the changes in Windsor House.
Windsor House
Mr Lyndon Rice, the Head of Windsor House, will be taking on the role of acting Head of Mathematics for the remainder of the year. Lyndon is going to be missed in the House Centre, but we know he will be an asset to the Math’s Department during this period. His competitive spirit will be missed when it comes to sporting carnivals and House competitions and we wish him all the best in his new role.
It is with pleasure, that we welcome Mr Matthew Potts as Acting Head of Windsor House until the end of the year. Mr Potts teaches in the Science Learning Area where as a teacher, he has established relationships with students which promote integrity and respect. He pursues healthy discussions with students where their point of view is valued, even in times where each party may have a differing opinion. As a Head of House, he will continue to develop and establish relationships of trust and respect and is committed to seeing young people flourish while standing in as a role model for those in his sphere of influence.

This term the Year 6s dove into their Literacy Learning with a provocation of making SNOW, in preparation for their study of Informative Texts and writing about Frost Dragons. The Year 6s also drew some amazing dragon eyes and orally learnt our Model Text by heart before competing against the rest of the cohort. We introduced the genre of Informative texts using a mythical creature to aid students in understanding the structure and writing techniques taught, without them also having to focus on researching and finding facts for a topic. This way when the students have to transfer their knowledge to 'doing this' for their final assessment, they will have a great chance of experiencing success.

Have Sum Fun Mathematics Competition 2021
The Have Sum Fun Competition is an exciting mathematics initiative that uses a quiz-night format. Teams of six students race against the clock to solve four intense rounds of eight challenging problems. Teams can only have a maximum of three students of the higher year level; e.g. in the Year 7 to 8 competition only three Year 8s are allowed in the team.
Once again, a group of very talented students from years 7 to 12 took part in the annual Have Sum Fun Mathematics Competition. The competitions were held on a Friday evening over 2 weekends at Hale College, Duncraig Senior High School and at Churchlands Senior High School.
17 of our top mathematics students competed against a large number of exceptionally strong schools and all our teams did remarkably well and are to be congratulated for their time and effort.
The Year 7 and 8 team supervised by Mr Lynch at Churchlands High School was made up of Kieran, Tayte and Oskar from Year 7 and Sean, Victoria and Charis from Year 8.
The Year 9 and 10 team was supervised by Mrs van Leen at Duncraig Senior High School. The students participating in this event were Alex, Jess and Marni from Year 9 and from Year 10, Nicole, Gabrielle and Daniel.
The senior team consisted of Kyle, Joshua, Jacques, Daniel, Jake and Dylan. Daniel (Year 10) stepped in at the last minute to help out the Year 11 and 12 team.
I would like to thank all the team members for giving up their Friday night as well as Mrs Butcher, Mrs van Leen, Mr Lynch and Mr Nguyen who gave up their time to train and supervise these students.

Eight of our students gave up five hours of their time on a Sunday to attend the North Zone Primary School Chess Championships recently. Our top four students came second in which was very well attended event, courtesy of that Netflix series. They received large silverware (plastic) for our office cabinet and have been invited to the state finals series.

WA Museum and Art Gallery of WA visit
On Wednesday 3 March the Year 10 Visual Arts students and Specialist Visual Art Club visited the Boola Bardip WA Museum and Art Gallery of WA. During our visit, we learnt about prominent West Australians, visited the reflections and connections galleries and engaged with the interactive displays. One of the highlights for the students was seeing the wildlife gallery and blue whale skeleton. After lunch we went to the Art Gallery of WA and were delighted to see the Tee Ken Ng and Tim Minchin installation of zoetropes that bring Tim Minchin’s song ‘Leaving LA’ to life. The students also had a tour learning about many indigenous artworks, both traditional and contemporary.

Mural workshop
On 9 March, the Year 11 ATAR and General Visual Arts students worked with Blank Walls artist, Brendan, to sketch up and paint their designs onto the wall outside Student Services. The theme for the mural was flora and fauna native to the Joondalup area. Keep a look out during the term as we continue to work on this exciting project!

Specialist Visual Art Club
During the term, students in Visual Art Club have been making some imaginative drawings and design ideas for the upcoming Shaun Tan competition held by the City of Subiaco. We have been experimenting with different drawing techniques, watercolour and gouache mediums.

Year 11 and 12 Media Excursions

On Friday 5 March, the Year 11 General Media Production and Analysis class went on excursion to Whiteman Park. This was an opportunity for the students to film ‘on location.’ Students worked in groups to develop ideas for new films in famous franchises and created trailers for these upcoming features. They have devised ideas for new films in The Maze Runner, High School Musical, Harry Potter and Friday the Thirteenth franchises, with the park’s variety of areas allowing our budding filmmakers to select settings that suited their narratives.
On Wednesday 10 March, the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Media Production and Analysis students enjoyed an evening at the outdoor cinema when they attended the 2020 Media Perspectives at Community Cinemas Burswood. The event showcased the top Year 12 copyright-free audio-visual Media productions from 2017. MPA students have to submit a ‘Media Art’ or ‘Power and Persuasion’ production task as part of their WACE examination and the vast majority of students choose to make a five minute film. The students enjoyed the wide variety of short films, which ranged from a documentary to war film to thought provoking films with experimental techniques. The Year 12 MPA students are currently working on creating their own productions and the Year 11 students are making music videos which pay homage to film movements and styles.

On Thursday 4 March the Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 French students travelled to the city to watch the film Of love and lies which was being screened as part of the Alliance Française French Film Festival. This festival takes place every year in all major
Australian cities and is an important event in the French cultural calendar. The students viewed the film in French with English subtitles which allowed them to improve their understanding of the language and culture.

In Week 7 this term our Football Academy students competed in the West Coast School Futsal Titles and completed a clean sweep as Champions in all Boys and Girls categories they entered, winning the North Metro Competitions in each age group from Years 6 to 11. Numerous schools across the week competed in the Titles, including Dianella Secondary College, Morley Senior High School, Peter Moyes Anglican Community School, Balga Senior High School, Lynwood Senior High School, Emmanuel Christian Community College, Australian Islamic College, Ashdale Secondary College, Ocean Reef Senior High School and Ballajura Community College.
As coaches, we were impressed by the intensity of our teams both in and out of possession, as well as the humility and sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the week. This was a great way to start 2021 before our Football Academy students begin playing in the School Sport WA Competitions in Terms 2 & 3.

Reviews are in!
“A truly fun, engaging and polished production. Each and every actor embraced their characters fully creating so many memorable moments. So much talent on display. A must see!”
“It was a pleasure to be an audience member at LJBC’s performance of Laughing Stock, a play that presented an abundance of amazingly talented young people who professionally acted a narrative that was both funny and surprising at every turn. Well done LJBC drama students on a successful performance that everyone must see.“
“The Senior Production of Laughing Stock was absolutely fantastic!!”
Congratulations to the wonderful cast of Laughing Stock! These students have worked hard all term to bring this play to life. They made sure it was full of humour, dramatic tension, and more special effects than we originally planned! The audiences were taken on a journey with Michelle and the Playwright, played by Year 12 students, Isobel and Jake, with an ensemble of wild and larger-than-life characters. It has been a pleasure to work with these students as their director and I am so proud of them. They deserve the wonderful reviews they received. Congratulations also goes to the VET Music students who entertained our audiences with their mix of soft rock, indie and alternative tunes that warmed up the audience ready for a great night. Even though we have come to the end of this production, stay tuned in Term 2 as we begin the planning and the much-anticipated announcement of the 2021 College Production.

Our Year 10 students attended bstreetsmart this week where they had the opportunity to learn about road safety and making wiser decisions on the road.
RAC has been hosting bstreetsmart in Western Australia since 2012, and in this time more than 53,000 secondary school students have attended.
RAC bstreetsmart features a crash scene re-enactment attended by the emergency services, just as it would occur at a real crash site. The students also have the opportunity to listen to speakers who have been directly impacted by road trauma and talk with emergency services personnel.
