Our Primary Fathers Day breakfast was a wonderful celebration of the love we have for the fathers, grandfathers and special people in the lives of our Primary students. The bacon and egg burgers were delicious and as popular as always, and the donut station was a great hit! The basketball tournament, table tennis, golf and many other activities were enjoyed by all. The Parents & Friends (P&F) ran a terrific gift stall, and it was delightful to watch how carefully our students chose their gifts to give. Thank you as always to the incredible Primary Staff for their invaluable help. We wish all our families a very blessed weekend for Fathers Day!

Yee Haw! Well, our Primary school cowboys and cowgirls enjoyed getting their boots on for our Western Wellbeing day on Thursday 18 August.
Here at LJBC, we believe that wellbeing & belonging go together like a horse and cart, so we crafted a day for all students from Kindy to Year 6 to enjoy a rootin-tootin time of fun, friendship and festivities that promote 'wellbelonging': healthy connections, positive memories, and opportunities for safe and creative challenges.
Thank you to all our incredible Primary staff for your ‘above and beyond‘ service and commitment to the wellbeing of our students and a special shout out to Mr Sonneman-Smith for helping to cook the sausage sizzle lunch.
The staff were also blessed by the generosity of a parent who baked up a storm of delicious treats for us to enjoy.
What an amazing community we are a part of.

Chess has recently become a very popular sport with many participants. LJBC Primary Chess Team competed in two of the four regional championships. They are to be congratulated for the great results. Approximately 25 schools competed in each regional championship. Our team qualified as one of the top schools for the State Championships. This month eight schools competed against each other over seven matches at Perth Modern College for the State Championship honours. The highlights for the LJBC team included receiving two of only eight individual merit awards. Eric (current U10 and U12 state champion) on the Captain’s table had 4 wins 2 draws 1 loss and Kevin had 6 wins and 1 loss on his respective table. Our team also drew 2-2 in its match against the eventual second placed team, who would be champions if they had defeated us in this round. The LJBC team finished a respectable 5th against the best players and teams in the state. A big thank you to Eric, William, Xander, Kevin and Amy who gave up 3 days of their own time including two Sundays to achieve these great results. We should be very proud of their dedication to chess development and in representing our school with distinction.

We are so proud of Andrew, Year 12 Drama student, who recently attended the Melbourne premier of Jub Clerc's feature film, Sweet As, which he stars in.
Sweet As is the first Australian feature film written and directed by a Western Australian First Nations filmmaker. We would like to extend our congratulations on the film’s success in winning the Innovation Award at Melbourne’s International Film Festival.

Last week Art Club had a Fashion Illustration and Sculpture Design workshop with Sculptor Greg Molloy. This fashion based sculpture workshop was inspired by Rorshach ink splatters. In this workshop, students used ink and wet media to produce experimental brushstrokes. They dyed fabric and re-interpreted their ink drawings into three-dimensional textile designs. They sewed their textile designs around metal armatures which they had bent into shape to look like moving figures.

On Saturday 27 August, two teams of Year 5 and 6 students participated in the Regional Finals for Creative Edge Problem Solving at Curtin University. The students had spent the previous six weeks working on a solution to a Literature and Communication (Year 5) and Science Engineering (Year 6) challenge. Throughout the six weeks, the students developed their skills in problem solving, teamwork, prop making, script writing, drama, creative thinking and engineering. Both teams worked hard and performed extremely well on the day. The feedback from the judges was positive and encouraging and we are so proud of how they performed on the day.

Secondary Creative Edge Problem Solving Challenge

On Saturday, a group of 29 students attended the Creative Edge Problem Solving Challenge at Curtin University. After six weeks of planning, writing, rehearsing, and preparing, the students were all very excited to showcase their performances. Each team received impeccable feedback from the judges who were impressed by the teams’ ability to think creatively, work collaboratively, and solve problems of critical importance to the 21st century.
We are so proud of these students for all of their hard work.

On Wednesday 24 August, our Year 10 to 12 Drama students participated in a performance incursion. Students performed a selection of scenes for a live audience of peers including August Osage County and One Man Two Guvnors in our College Auditorium. The showcase offered the Year 10s a glimpse of what to expect in Year 11 and 12 Drama and a chance for feedback and questions. Highlights included slapstick comedy, audience interaction and accent work.

Year 10 Drama – Drop Dead Juliet

Over the past ten weeks, the Year 10 Drama classes have been immersed into the world of Shakespeare. With Romeo and Juliet as our set text, the students have been learning all about iambic pentameter, the role theatre played in Elizabethan society and how to translate all those doths, thous and thees into modern day English.
Our study has culminated in a two class production of Drop Dead Juliet which they performed to each other. We meet Juliet who has had enough! No more poison, stabbing or dying. She wants less death and more girls in the story. Not everyone’s so keen with the changes, including the author! The Year 10s worked hard to memorise lines, learn dances and know their hither from their thither! A big congratulations to the Year 10s for creating an entertaining performance.

Four of our senior gifted and talented students recently represented LJBC at the Evatt Trophy, a model UN style competition. The students competed in teams of two, representing France and Brazil's interests in a case about rising tensions in the Solomon Islands. Both teams worked incredibly hard to prepare for the competition and did a fantastic job of advocating on behalf of their countries. We are so proud of these wonderful students.

AFL Coach Jonathan Grullis
It is great to be able to highlight our talented staff at LJBC. We would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts that Jonathan Grullis has had on Australian Football, as a high level coach.
Mr Grullis is currently a level 2 high performance coach and as such was appointed as Head Coach for the State 15s AFL girls team for 2022. This year saw a return to interstate travel for the national carnival, which was held in Lavington NSW, just outside Albury.
Mr Grullis, expertly led the team to allow the girls every opportunity to showcase their skills. The WA girls finished in second place, narrowly going down by 8pts in the Grand Final against QLD.
Not only has Mr Grullis coached at the state level, but he has once again been appointed as assistant coach of the Associated and Catholic Colleges (ACC) AFL girls representative team. The ACC team played a 3 association playoff with Independent Girls Schools Association (IGSSA) and Government Schools through SSWA. ACC finish in second place with some tough competition throughout the day.
Well done Mr Grullis!

I was privileged to join some of the LJBC Chaplaincy team in attending the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast, an event where the community joins with state leaders to pray for Western Australia. We prayed for WA businesses, for those who hold positions of authority and government, and for the youth of WA, that we can lead with integrity and act with wisdom. We heard from WA Governor Chris Dawson and Keynote speaker Graham Maybury.
I was inspired by the story of Graham Maybury, a Baptist minister, who hosted 6PR radio program ‘Nightline’ for 33 years and established Lifeline WA because he understood people’s need for crisis support and counselling services. He encouraged us that we can have a lasting positive impact on those around us. We can be a light in the darkness when we act with genuine care, kindness, empathy, and listen with compassion. We might not have all the answers, but we can listen. And that can make all the difference.
