Running club is a great opportunity for our students from Years 2-6 to engage in physical activity. The aim is to increase student fitness levels in a fun and social environment.
Participants start with a warm up and then complete laps that wind around the College grounds. Laps are recorded and milestones will be recognised at an assembly later in the Term.
Most would say that the highlight is the Bacon and Egg roll breakfast, lovingly cooked on the BBQ and served up by our wonderful parent volunteers.

It’s been an exciting few months in the Aspire Program, with our students participating in a range of enriching academic events and excursions. From linguistic puzzles to historical artefacts, the Aspire students have been thinking critically, collaborating effectively, and representing our school with pride.
OzCLO Linguistics Competition
This year, students across Years 7–12 took part in the Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO). Our Year 12 team (Sofia, Emma, Robyn, and Sean) performed brilliantly and named the WA State Champions for 2025! They were invited to the national finals at UWA. We spent the day on campus, where students not only competed at a high level but also enjoyed a university tour. It was a fantastic opportunity to explore future pathways and experience a day in the life of a UWA student.
Future Problem Solving - Curtin Excursion
As part of our preparation for the upcoming international finals in the USA, Cara, Sam, Lucas, Tayte, Abigail, and Chantal, our FPS team attended an incredible full-day excursion to Curtin University. The day began with a fascinating session on the historical significance of sport as a tool for social change. This was followed by a tour of the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library, where students examined rare artefacts dating back to the 1500s and learnt about digital and physical preservation methods. The day concluded with a powerful visit to the Carrolup Centre for Truth-Telling, where we explored First Nations artwork and the vital role it plays in cultural preservation and storytelling. It was a deeply inspiring and informative day that has added depth to our students’ understanding of the real-world relevance of historical preservation, an important theme in this year’s competition. We can't wait to see them shine in the US in just two weeks' time!
WADL School's Debating League
This week, our Year 9 Debating team went up against Perth Modern in an impromptu debate about the importance of privately funded hospitals. Our team, consisting of Katie, Harry, Stefan, and Lily was so impressive that the adjudicator called their speeches "almost faultless". This incredible feedback is testament to the students' problem solving and teamwork skills as they had just one hour to prepare for the debate with no access to teacher support or the internet. Congratulations, Year 9s!
da Vinci Decathlon
Students in Years 5-10 represented our school at the da Vinci Decathlon, hosted at UWA over three action-packed days this week. This academic challenge tested their abilities across ten disciplines including engineering, philosophy, science, code breaking, and more. Our students demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and resilience as they tackled complex tasks and worked under pressure! We are incredibly proud of their efforts and enthusiasm. In addition to the learning and experience, we also came away with some awesome results!

The Gift of Failure - Dr Mandie Shean
Failure is a gift. I am not referring to failure where you didn’t try, didn’t care, or gave up. I am talking about when you gave it your best but didn’t quite achieve what you were after.
Most people don’t see failure as a gift because it can be embarrassing, disappointing, frustrating, and so it is avoided at all costs. The problem with avoiding failure is that you also avoid everything that comes with it. You avoid learning, new people and experiences, and never learn what you are actually capable of. I am not saying I want to fail, but some gifts come with that experience that you cannot get any other way.
The gift of learning
Nobody picks up a violin and plays in an orchestra the next day. To learn the instrument it requires practice and many, many mistakes, even before a song can be strung together. To avoid the mistakes is to avoid learning the instrument. When you embrace the failures, you open yourself up to the learning experience.
The gift of feedback
Each fail is feedback that provides you with direction to do better. If you fail your driving test there are areas you need practice in. If you fail at your job promotion, there is somewhere you need to upskill. Rather than ignore the fail and continue doing the wrong thing, take the gift of feedback and do something different.
The gift of coping
Failing helps you to develop coping skills. You learn how to sit with feelings of disappointment, frustration, embarrassment, or sadness. You learn how to work through the feelings and learn they don’t last forever. Michael Rutter, a resilience expert, called these “steeling events”. Low-level challenges help to strengthen us and teach us to cope with harder things.
The gift of perseverance
Sometimes you get what you want on the first go, but other times it is the 2nd, 3rd...or 5,127th (if you are Sir James Dyson). When you see failure as normal, you are less likely to give up and more likely to keep trying. Nobody wrote a bestseller on the first draft. Start to see the mistakes as part of learning and growing, and then you will keep growing and become the best version of you.
Studies show that young people who are protected from failure are more depressed and less satisfied with life in adulthood. While it might seem helpful – removing the failure also takes away all the gifts. Go ahead and protect them from harmful experiences, but allow them to try things and learn when things don’t go their way.

Student Photo & Video Consent Form
At LJBC, the privacy, safety and wellbeing of our students matters greatly. We’re committed to creating a secure and respectful environment where every student feels protected and supported.
As part of our efforts to keep student information secure and ensure we meet privacy requirements, we ask all families to complete our Student Photo & Video Consent Form.
This form allows you to let us know whether you're happy for your child to be included in photos or videos taken throughout the school year. These may be used in newsletters, on our website, social media, and other official College communications.
We'd love your support in allowing us to celebrate and share the wonderful things our students do. If you do not give permission, your child will be excluded from all photos, including class photos, group activities, and candid moments with friends. In line with our College policies, we're not able to make exceptions.
Please take a moment to scan the QR code or click on the link below to complete the short online form:
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and respectful environment for all Lake Joondalup Baptist College students.
Our Primary Mothers Day Stall, organised by our amazing P&F, gave our Primary students a chance to choose something special for their Mums, who give so much of themselves. With big smiles, the students roamed from table to table, excited to choose that perfect gift. Beyond the excitement, it’s also an excellent way for them to practise decision-making and budgeting in a fun and meaningful way.
Perth Career, Education, Training and Employment Expo

Just over 30 of our Year 10, 11 and 12 students took the opportunity to head down to the Perth Convention Centre on Thursday 15 May to attend the Perth Career, Education, Training and Employment Expo. The expo brings together over 100 organisations including vocational and professional training providers, industry associations, employers, and local as well as national universities.
Students were able to talk to industry experts about pathways, university and training options or job opportunities. They could learn more about the jobs of today and tomorrow in Energy, Tourism and Events, International Education, Defence Industries, Mining and METS, Space Industries, Health and Medical Life Sciences, and Primary Industry.

After an incredible 25 years of devoted service to LJBC, we say farewell to Helen, a beloved colleague, mentor, and friend. Helen began her journey at LJBC in 1999 and has worn many hats with distinction. Some of these roles included teaching PE and Science, serving as Dean of Students and Acting Deputy Principal. She brought commitment, wisdom, and a passion for students with every role.
Helen was instrumental in shaping the College's pastoral care through the creation of the House Centre and was well known for her innovative approach, compassionate leadership, and steady presence in challenging moments. She was always there for students and staff, known as someone you could talk to, who gave thoughtful advice and stood up for you whenever needed. Helen's influence went far beyond her administrative role. She genuinely cared about every "little Johnny," guiding many students along their journeys and proudly celebrating their successes even years after leaving LJBC. She also brought joy and humour to staff life, from adventurous camp stories to moments of laughter in the office.
As Helen embarks on her next chapter, focusing on family and well-earned rest, she leaves a legacy of professionalism, kindness, and love for the LJBC community.
Thank you Helen, you will be deeply missed.
VET Students of the Month - April
We are proud to share that we have selected two outstanding students for our VET Students of the Month for April – a well-deserved recognition of their dedication, professionalism, and passion for their chosen career paths.
Chlea-Jade, currently completing her Certificate IV in Education Support, is making a remarkable impact during her work placement at Wesley College in South Perth. Her commitment to supporting students and staff has not gone unnoticed. We’ve received glowing feedback praising her professionalism, positive attitude, and the contribution she brings to the classroom environment. Chlea-Jade is a shining example of what it means to be both a learner and a leader.
Equally inspiring is Hannah, who is undertaking a Certificate IV in Allied Health. Hannah is completing her placement with Brightwater Care Group, where she has quickly become a favourite among the residents. Her natural empathy, kindness, and dedication to care have shown that she has a true calling for this profession. Staff and residents alike have praised her for the warmth and energy she brings to the aged care home.
We are incredibly proud of both Chlea-Jade and Hannah. Their achievements reflect their hard work and passion, combined with the strength of our VET program in preparing students for careers. We look forward to following their journeys and celebrating their future successes.
Congratulations, Chlea-Jade and Hannah!

Chaplaincy - Advocacy for foreign aid

We were grateful to welcome guest speaker Ed Devine to LJBC this week, sharing with our Year 7s about the struggles of people in our world and the power of advocacy for foreign aid. Students had the opportunity to choose to add their voice to a petition asking our local MP to raise Australia’s foreign aid budget.
It was inspiring to see young people learning that their voice matters - and using it to speak up for those in greater need.
Matthew Harris
Director of Spiritual Formation and Service
Former LJBC student James Overy stepped onto the training pitch with Manchester United’s senior squad this week. After eight months of injury rehab following his scholarship signing last summer, James marked his return with an U18 debut in February and now hits another milestone. We are excited for what lies ahead.

The Music Mentor Program for 2025 was re-launched on Wednesday 30 April. The program aims to develop exceptional Secondary school musicians and aspiring Primary school musicians by pairing them together to play and learn from each other. The culmination of the program is an end of year concert where Mentors and Mentees perform duets together, sharing their musical journey for family and friends.
Some exciting additions to the program this year include an excursion to WAAPA for a lunchtime concert, partnering with UWA Music so Mentors and Mentees can develop connections and learn from University Music Students, conducting workshops for Music Mentors and additional performance opportunities for both Mentor and Mentees to refine their performance skills and confidence.
During our weekly rehearsals this year, music students will develop their connections with each other through guided musical and social activities. It was fantastic to see all the students already forming positive relationships with each other and enjoying sharing their musical gifts and experiences. I look forward to watching them all continue to grow musically and personally, and I hope the connections formed here will continue well beyond the program.

Year 9 Career Taster Excursion

Another Career Taster experience that our LJBC Year 9 students have had the opportunity to participate in from last term was the 'That's Getting Technical' taster, where they explored a suite of integrated technologies, including robotics, coding, cybersecurity, and 3D printing.
