The College was looking at redesigning the AFL geurnseys for boys and girls while acknowledging the Mooro Boodjar. The Joondalup region is part of Mooro country and an important place for Indigenous people.
We are pleased to advise that the guernsey was designed by one of our Year 7 students Azarayah, together with the TARA uniforms design team and we could not be prouder of the result.
The story behind the design encompasses the following;
On the left-hand side there are six different colours which represent the six Noongar seasons and within those seasons there are images representing the fauna and the communities that use the lake.
Birak (First Summer) December & January
Bunuru (Second Summer) February & March
Djeran (Autumn) April & May
Makuru (Winter) June & July
Djilba (First Spring) August & September
Kambarang (Transformational time of the year) October & November
The Wagyl (Rainbow Serpent) was responsible for the creation and protection of waterways around Perth.
Running through the centre of the geurnsey is the light blue colour representing the glistening, Lake Joondalup. Back in the dream time, there is the story of the Charnock woman and during a full moon, it is said that you can see her long white hair reflecting from the stars above.
The darker blue colour on the right side represents our proximity to the ocean with the circles representing the LJBC community. Alongside the lake are kangaroo footprints acknowledging their place on the land.
Looking ahead, the College will be educating our student body further regarding indigenous culture.

The Primary Library is always an exciting place to visit. This Term we are celebrating Book Week. The theme for 2022 is ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’. The theme is about stepping into your own story, dreaming with eyes open, listening to country as the first storyteller, learning from friends who help you on the way. The Library has been set up to provide three different spaces, all relating to the theme that the students can use at lunchtime.
The big four poster bed is a space where the students can come and read. Reading IS dreaming with our eyes open. Reading is the connection between authors - the storytellers and readers, and how their words capture a reader’s imaginations. A vivid imagination turns dreams into a reality prompted by well-crafted words that jump off the page.
In our Dreamtime Space we have set up some collaborative weaving and a puzzle. Students can come and add fabric and wool to our weaving chair. It is a space to share stories and connect with one another.
Our Alice in Wonderland space invites students to read a book and fall into another world.
Our Makers Space encourages imagination as students can see their dreams become a reality. The space has provided many opportunities for the students to be creative and have fun together.

Term 3 began with the idea that the Year 12s would soon be finishing up with their final assessments and exams will be on the horizon. It is important that all Year 12s do an assessment of their current standing in their current course work and ensuring they are meeting the criteria for their WACE. I will begin looking at how they are tracking for Graduation and begin meeting with students to discuss any issues and their plans post high school. It is an exciting time for them as they begin thinking of their final finish of High School.
Subject and Course selection for 2023 is in full swing after the successful Curriculum Expo. It was a time where students and families could meet with the different Learning Areas and look to the future study of students. Not only did we have each Learning Area represented but we also had the Universities in WA on hand to help students look to the future, so they know what they need to study in high school prior to that next step of University or TAFE or Apprenticeships. There are so many opportunities for students, and we want to ensure they are well informed.
Once again, we were honoured to be able to award not only Curriculum and Service Colours but Curriculum Honours to a well deserving Year 12 student. Jake was awarded Full College Colours in Curriculum, Service and College Curriculum Honours. Congratulation Jake on these outstanding awards.

On Wednesday 20 July our Year 10 to 12 Drama students participated in a specialist incursion. Bell Shakespeare, Sydney’s leading touring theatre education company, visited our College Auditorium to perform Shakespeare Is Dead. The show offered a smorgasbord of Shakespeare from romance to tragedies, to histories and comedies. The players introduced a host of Shakespeare’s characters and explored some of his most iconic scenes. Students received a masterclass in iambic pentameter, and even learnt about Elizabethan England and the world in which Shakespeare wrote his plays. Highlights included audience interaction and dagger fights.

World acclaimed celebrity conductor Vasily Petrenko landed in Perth for his debut with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Our Music students were fortunate enough to watch a live rehearsal where they got a chance to gain detailed insights into Shostakovich's Symphony No.11 given by the conductor.
At the start of the morning the assistant conductor briefed the students on aspects of concert etiquette, the difficulties of the music, the meaning behind each of the four movements and other interesting bits and pieces.
Students were then seated in the choir stalls above the orchestra and could look down and watch the musicians play, mark their music scores and change and clean their instruments.
The large orchestra included some auxiliary instruments that the students were less familiar with like: a celeste, bass clarinet, cor anglais and a contrabassoon.
This excursion proved to be a fabulous learning experience and exposure to a wonderful example of symphonic writing and style.

After winning the Northern Championship earlier in the term, the team travelled to Aubin Grove to play against the winners of the Southern, Eastern and Peel regions. LJBC went undefeated in the competition with wins against Coogee and South Coast Baptist College in the Quarter and Semi Finals, before victory in the final against Yanchep. Congratulations to the team on this great achievement.

Huge congratulations to Daniel Bennie (Year 11), who was recently selected for the Australian U17s National team for the ASEAN Football Federation Championship in Jakarta. Australia will play against Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia in the group stage of the competition. This is a reward for all of his consistent hard work and dedicated approach to his football over the last few years. Good luck Daniel, keep up the great work!

ACC Inclusive Futsal Competition
Captain’s write Up.
Students from LJBC’s Learning Enhancement program competed in the ACC Inclusive Futsal Competition on Friday 5 August at Lords Indoor Centre.
We played against many formidable opponents, some being Prendiville, Mater Dei, Ursula Frayne, Lumen Christi and many others. Everyone showed such great sportsmanship and played very well and respectfully. Everyone had a great team spirit going in, definitely a lot of us were nervous but we were also excited and eager to do it. Everyone played fairly and treated all players equally, no matter the capabilities or limitations that person may have had.
The Stephen Michael Foundation organised the event. Thank you to them for making the day possible. This Foundation utilises sports-based wellbeing, education, leadership, training and employment programs to support children and young people to become valued members of their community regardless of their cultural background, gender or social circumstance.
Our team manager and Year 9 Sport Delegate Lois was incredible! Lois sorted out all the positions to where everyone would play, all the strategies and did an amazing job at leading the team. Year 9 Sport Delegate James who also played, helped a lot and was a great team player who displayed amazing skills and helped us play through the games, also playing a game as goalie. He displayed great sportsmanship as well. We could not have done it without Lois and James, they did a great job helping us and it was lovely to have them.
Ms Baker, Mr Clift and Mrs Ferreira also made this day possible by organising the team and taking time out of their day to help everyone, having an after-school training session, having meetings, where to be, when to be there and a planner to help us. So, a massive thank you to them and all the help they have given us.
Thank you to all the teams who came out that day and tried their hardest, as everyone played well, was really respectful, had great team spirit and showed great sportsman-like conduct. Overall, just awesome people who also helped make the day possible, so thank you to them.
Most of all I want to thank the whole team for coming out, trying their hardest, winning, having a great team spirit, being kind and respectful, and having fun. I would not have had that day go any differently. I enjoyed this program so much and I cannot wait to do it again next year. It was a wonderful day, and I am glad I got to be the captain of that amazing team. I loved being part of the team and playing with them. The day will always go with me, reminding me that it’s always better to be surrounded by the people you care for; whether you win or lose.
Thank you to everyone who participated and thank you for letting me be captain, it was a huge honour.

Recently, 32 of our academically gifted students attended the prestigious da Vinci Decathlon at UWA. The students did a fantastic job of representing LJBC and placed in the top three in multiple categories including Code breaking, Art and Poetry, Drama, and Cartography. The Year 9 team did exceptionally well, placing in four categories and coming third overall in a pool of 26 teams. We are so proud of the efforts of all of these wonderful students.

At the end of Term 2, we celebrated Chaplaincy Week. We focused on the topic of anti-bullying. All students were given a House coloured string to wear for the week as a sign that they will stand up against bullying. We raised money for the anti-bullying organisation – Bully Zero with a sausage sizzle. More information about Bully Zero and the programs they deliver to schools can be found here: https://www.bullyzero.org.au/.
We also finished up our girl’s program - ‘Blossom’. This was a fantastic five-week program, which the students really enjoyed. Every week, we ate some delicious treats made by the Foods department, and discussed topics of courage, love languages and beyond, while making something to take home (keyrings, flower crowns were among some of these items). Some relevant and positive conversations were had around self-worth and being kind to others. I was encouraged to hear the Year 11 students Talia and Niamh share their relevant life experiences with our lower Secondary students. Thanks to all involved in making this a special time.
We look forward to a great Term 3!

Recently, we hosted our annual College Curriculum Expo evening for students in Years 8-12 and their families. The evening assists our students in selecting their subjects for 2023 and it was wonderful to have so many parents and students onsite, visiting curriculum stalls to network with staff and discuss the large range of subjects on offer at LJBC. Students got the opportunity to learn about the curriculum and competencies of each unit they might want to study and to map out plans for their senior studies. We were also thrilled to welcome some of our external partners from TAFE, Careerlink, Curtin, Notre Dame, UWA, ECU, Murdoch and the ADF to give students first-hand advice as they make these important decisions. Thank you to our wonderful staff for all their efforts on the night to support students and to all families who attended this essential partnership.
