Primary - 100 Days of School Celebrations

Our Primary students marked 100 days of school with a playful dress-up day!
It was a fun and joy-filled way to recognise all the learning, growth and achievements they’ve made so far this year.
We look forward to the next chapter of curiosity, friendship, and learning!
Leading Cyber Safety Education at LJBC

We were pleased to welcome ySafe to our College recently. As one of Australia’s leading cyber safety education providers, they delivered engaging, age-appropriate sessions designed to help students build the skills they need to stay safe and confident online. With the online world becoming more complex, this was a timely and important step in supporting our students’ wellbeing, now and in the years ahead.

Across the first week of Term 3 we have taken groups of students from Year 9 through to Year 12 to AQWA.
It was a jam-packed day with experiences included fish feeding, water testing, beach microplastic sampling, a behind the scenes tour of the coral conservatory, turtle feeding and a research workshop, and a glass bottom boat tour of the aquarium – the marine life is so much bigger from above the aquarium! This was a highlight.
We hope to have sparked career curiosity in students in the fields of aquaculture, environmental science, and marine and zoological tourism.

Our LJBC Open Girls Netball team competed in the School Sport WA All Schools Netball Championship, where schools from across the state compete. After qualifying earlier in the season, our team powered through the elimination finals yesterday, winning 4 out of 5 matches. We reached the quarterfinals, where we faced a strong Warwick SH side – a team known for dominating the entire competition. Finishing in the top 8 schools in WA is an outstanding achievement. Well done everyone!
Royal Perth Hospital - P.A.R.T.Y Program - Reducing Youth Injury & Trauma

Last Wednesday, 24 of our students participated in a full-day excursion to Royal Perth Hospital to take part in the P.A.R.T.Y. Program (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth). This powerful and educational experience is designed to help young people understand the real-life consequences of risky behaviours, particularly those related to driving.
Throughout the day, students heard firsthand accounts from trauma surgeons, paramedics, and survivors of road accidents and spinal injuries. They also toured key areas of the hospital, including the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit, gaining a sobering insight into the impact of trauma.
In addition to these eye-opening sessions, students had the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning through basic first aid and physiotherapy activities. The day was both informative and impactful, equipping students with knowledge and perspectives that will stay with them as they approach adulthood and increased responsibilities.
Welcome back to our Year 11 Future Problem Solving Team!

Last week, LJBC celebrated Language Week with a variety of engaging cultural activities across our language classrooms.
Year 7 Japanese students took part in an interactive Samurai and Ninja workshop led by Aiko from Wasabi Kids. They learned about the fascinating history of ninjas and samurai, and had the chance to develop their ninja skills through a series of hands-on activities.
Meanwhile, students in Years 8 to 10 participated in an energetic karate lesson with Mark Golding from Gold Martial Arts. They explored the history of karate, practiced basic self-defense techniques, and gained insight into the discipline and philosophy behind the martial art.
Year 11 and 12 Japanese students enjoyed some matcha icecream while watching a movie in Japanese.
Year 7–9 French students practiced their speaking skills by ordering a crêpe in French, which they then enjoyed while watching the classic French film Petit Nicholas
Congratulations to Ruby and Jade, the winners of our Hi-Chew and Biscoff guessing competition!

SSWA Primary Football Champions!

Our Primary Boys Football team has taken out the title with a strong 2–0 win over Burns Beach Primary in the final at the Kingsway Sporting Complex yesterday.
The boys went undefeated through the group stage with wins against Wembley Downs, Peter Moyes, St. Andrews, Our Lady of Mercy, and St James Alkimos, finishing on top.
Congratulations to our champions!
Whole-College Music Eisteddfod - Cut off date extended!
This year, the Music Department is excited to present the whole-school College Eisteddfod!
The Eisteddfod is a fantastic opportunity for students to perform before their family and peers, showcasing the hard work and hours of practice required to master their chosen instrument. It is also an opportunity for them to receive feedback from a professional musician who will be adjudicating each category.
In the past, we have had Music Eisteddfods run separately in the Primary and Secondary Schools. In 2025, we will combine the two over three days, including additional categories, prizes, and a more varied range of musical opportunities. This year, there will be categories for soloists, duets, small ensembles, bands, Music Mentors and their Mentees and even a 'Family Performance Category' where students will have the opportunity to invite family members to perform and/or accompany them.
The Eisteddfod will run from 26-28 August, so start preparing your repertoire and connecting with friends and family who you might like to perform with.
The cutoff date for applications has been extended and will now be closing on Friday 8 August, so get in quick! Just click on the link below and fill out your application form.

Author in Residence 2025: Shane McCarthy Inspires a New Generation of Storytellers

Students had the exciting opportunity to meet Shane McCarthy, a freelance writer whose work has featured in the iconic worlds of DC and Marvel Comics. Known for his work on legendary characters like Batman and Transformers, Shane shared insights into the creative process behind comic book storytelling—and the determination it took to break into the industry.
Shane's journey to becoming a published writer was anything but easy. After facing multiple rejections from publishers, he took a bold step and travelled to the United States to attend a comic convention in search of his big break. His perseverance paid off when he was offered the chance to write for DC Comics, beginning with none other than Batman. Shane has continued to grow his career and is now working on his own original graphic novel series, set to be released next year.
During his time with us, Shane led workshops that gave students a fascinating look into the evolution of superheroes and the power of visual storytelling. He explored the origins of characters like Superman, Batman, Spiderman and Wonder Woman—surprising many students with how long these icons have been part of pop culture. One memorable moment was discovering that the symbol on Superman’s chest is actually his Kryptonian family crest, with the yellow parts forming the letter and the red providing the background.
Shane guided students to understand that storytelling is a natural human trait and that we instinctively make meaning from images. Through engaging discussions, students explored the values and traits each superhero represents. The workshops concluded with a hands-on creative challenge: designing and defining their own original superhero.
Shane’s visit sparked excitement, imagination, and a deeper appreciation for the art of storytelling—and may have even planted the seeds for some future comic creators among our students.

LJBC recently celebrated and said goodbye to someone who has been such a big part of our lives — our amazing Jodie Southwell.
For 19 years, Jodie has been more than just our senior laboratory technician. She’s been our go-to problem solver, our behind-the-scenes miracle worker. She’s been the one who always finds a way, and the one who never hesitates to help — with energy, creativity, and an encouraging word.
You’ve served all of us so faithfully and humbly, Jodie, and we’ve been the lucky ones to work alongside someone who lives out Acts 20:35 so beautifully:
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
You’ve given us your time, your support, your wisdom — and always with a joyful spirit. You’ve made this place feel like a team, and like a family. We’re so sad to see you go, we’re also incredibly excited for you to enjoy what’s next.
May your days be filled with peace, purpose, and joy.
May you find time for rest and relaxation, delight in small things, and new meaning in the freedom of retirement.
May God bless you richly, as you have so richly blessed us.
From The Science Team

83 Year 6 students and 12 staff journeyed across to Sydney and Canberra recently. The students had a wonderful time touring Darling Harbour and visiting Taronga Zoo while in Sydney. In Canberra, we had the privilege of seeing learning come to life while visiting places such as Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy (Old Parliament) and the Australian War Memorial. Many snow balls were thrown in our time at the snow and the teachers showed their incredible tobogganing skills racing the students down the hill.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding to our school in the amount of $510 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. We are exceptionally grateful to our Government for their generosity in this.
We are incredibly proud of the growth that we witnessed in our students. It is a huge feat for these young students to spend a week on the other side of the country without their families. These remarkable young people were outstanding examples of the very best of LJBC. Many staff and volunteers at the places we visited comment on the students’ manners, engagement and positive behaviour. What an amazing trip!
A special thank you to the outstanding team of staff who went on the trip.
The LJBC Parent Participation Program (PPP)
The LJBC Parent Participation Program (PPP) encourages families to contribute a minimum of 10 hours per year.
We are seeking parents/guardians who might be able to support our Science students by washing and ironing a set of lab coats/aprons
OR
By carrying out small alterations with a sewing machine - typically reattaching hanging loops on the lab coats.
This will count towards your PPP requirement and can be done over a weekend or over the school holidays: Sept/Oct 2025, or Dec/Jan to be credited for the 2026 school year. Pick up and drop off will occur during working hours from College reception on Kennedya Drive.
If you are available to assist this would be greatly appreciated - please contact Mrs Deepika Pal, our Senior laboratory technician, Deepika.Pal@ljbc.wa.edu.au regarding a time that is suitable for you.
Thank you for your consideration - your assistance with this greatly benefits our students.
Planning for 2026? Let Enrolments know early
