Primary Girls Football Academy (Soccer) – SSWA Northern Champions

Football Academy Coaches

For the past 5 weeks, our Year 4 students have had an NRL Touch Football coach teach them the game of Touch Football. Coach Caleb has been introducing the Year 4s to a wide range of different concepts that can be difficult to comprehend at this age. This included passing the ball backwards, teams working in line formations, running forwards in attack and backwards in defence. These clinics were made possible through ‘Sporting Schools’, which enables schools to partner with sporting associations, to introduce students to a wider range of sports.

Last Friday 14 May, I had the pleasure of coming together with many of our Pre Primary mums as we enjoyed a relaxed and fun afternoon sculpting clay plant holders at our first Connect and Create Gathering. It was wonderful to carve out some time from our full lives to laugh together, play with clay and grow a friendship. Thank you to those mums who were able to join in.
Our next Connect and Create for Year 1 mums will be held on Friday 4 June. Details will be emailed to you.
I am looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Our Primary Inter School Swimming team participated in the NIPSSA Inter School Swimming Carnival at the end of last term. Our swimmers were very competitive and achieved a fantastic overall third place. We had a number of swimmers break Inter School records and our Year 3 - 6 mixed 8x50m team won the Freestyle Grand Relay. We look forward to next year’s carnival as there are many good swimming prospects in our Primary school ready to join the team. Well done everyone!

In Japan, 5 May is Children’s Day.
On this day in Japan colourful Koinobori carp kites are flown to represent parents’ hopes for their children to grow up brave and strong like the carp who can swim upstream against the current. They also display kabuto samurai helmets in their homes. In the LJBC Primary, Japanese classes participated in a range of activities to mark this special day. Our younger students flew carp kites on the oval while some of our older students made origami samurai helmets and others made special hanging mobiles. It was a memorable week for our students.
DeSales Sensei and Pearce Sensei
Our Primary aged students were entertained on Friday with fun activities including a disco, dress up and movie night for our Pre Kindy to Year 2s and an inflatable tug of war, obstacle course, hero tag, Wii games and a silent disco for our Year 3 - 6 students. Thank you to our parents (who enjoyed a well deserved night off!) and to the Primary teachers and staff for organising an incredibly fun night.

Our Kindy classes enjoyed a visit from West Oz Wildlife recently, learning more about Australian animals and reptiles in our ‘Living Things’ unit of study.
The incursion was a wonderful hands-on educational experience allowing our youngest students to learn about conservation from passionate animal handlers who have a wealth of experience and knowledge of the amazing native animals in their care. Some of the highlights of this visit were meeting a 'friendly' Dingo named Yapper (who doesn't yap - but we learnt that he howls like a wolf), Keira the Koala, Bruce the Bobtail, and Rambo and Ninja the Pythons. The children were very engaged and asked many interesting questions. What a wonderful opportunity to have up close and personal encounters with the wildlife, allowing the children to conduct observations, touch the animals and even hold some of the animals. They also learnt about animal care, safe animal handling, and some very interesting facts about each species and the ecosystem in which they live.
The statement of the day was one of the little boys who, when introduced to Ninja the Python, said "we eat Ninja at home". We were all a little surprised by this, but then soon discovered in the next sentence that "we bake Ninjabread (gingerbread) men and they are delicious!" This is why we love our jobs!
“Our goal is to raise enthusiasm and awareness around the environment, conservation, and our precious endangered species; the little minds we inspire today could spark the solutions for the future.” West Oz Wildlife

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award (Australia) is a world leading youth development program, helping young people to discover their purpose, passion and place in the world to become World Ready citizens.
The Award is about individual challenge, variety of activity, duration, support, teamwork and recognition. As every individual is different, so too are the challenges that young people undertake to achieve their Award. At the College, we provide a number of opportunities for our students to achieve the requirements for the four different sections of the Award, those being Voluntary Service, Skill, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey. A number of the criteria are covered in our Year 9 Adventure Camp which happens in November each year and also for cadets through the LJBC Emergency Service Cadets.
Our students simply need to set personally challenging goals for improvement and demonstrate effort as they strive to reach these goals. A demonstration of commitment through weekly effort is the key, along with regular interaction with the activity assessor who, at our College, is Mr Downsborough. Finally, to help young people overcome their fears and challenges, the Award provides them with opportunities to learn from experience.
ECU has approved The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award as part of the portfolio of evidence that can be submitted with an application via the Experience Based Entry Scheme. This pathway includes access to most of the undergraduate courses at ECU.
Through a strong yet flexible framework, your child can uniquely design their Award, choosing activities that spark their interest and challenge them to achieve great heights. If your child is interested in participating in the Duke of Edinburgh, please see the link below and feel free to discuss with either Mr Downsborough or myself.

Congratulations to LJBC Secondary Physical Education teacher, Mr Jonathan Grullis who was recently successful in being appointed as the inaugural ACC All-Stars Girls AFL assistant coach.
A current Level 2 accredited coach, Mr Grullis has extensive coaching experience at a high level. Since 2013, he has been the senior assistant coach for the WA state 15 schoolgirls, has coached West Perth development squads, specialist programs and numerous All-star teams for both West Perth and East Fremantle Football clubs.
The team will be selected from students in Years 10 - 12 across all 88 ACC schools and colleges. All games are scheduled to be played in August and the ACC girls will battle it out against All-star teams from the Government and Independent Girls School Sport Association (IGSSA)
“It is always an honour and a privilege to coach and see students continue to develop and improve in AFL, I am really looking forward to this opportunity to represent the ACC schools and ACC students in these upcoming games.”
Congratulations Jonathan.

Our HP&E staff recently participated in a workshop to learn more about the benefits of how foam rolling can help to improve flexibility, boost energy levels, help detoxify the body and lower physical and mental stress.
Staff learnt how to perform effective stretches and release exercises to help combat a range of issues including injuries, inflammation, pain, sore muscles, and improve recovery and circulation.
Foam rolling and trigger pointing are forms of myofascial release suitable for all fitness levels and body types. By applying pressure to specific tight spots and trigger points throughout your body you can assist in muscle recovery and a return to healthy function.
This initial workshop aims to educate our staff so they can eventually assist and teach our students on the benefits of a foam roller for sports warm-up, recovery and general well being.
The workshop was presented by BlackRoll who provide high quality, 100% recyclable, German made rollers.

Year 3.1 - WA Police Incursion

The Year 3.1 students participated in an incursion today and met a constable from WA Police. Constable Kruger taught the students about his role in keeping the community safe and showed the students his police truck.
We have been learning about devices in Digital Technologies and Constable Kruger was able to show the students the devices that he uses to do his job effectively. It was interesting to note that the devices that police officers use are different to the devices that would be used in other jobs such as those found in a supermarket or at school.
The students asked many questions to clarify their understanding and had a lot of fun trying on police hats and holding a police badge.
The most important thing that Constable Kruger taught the students was that out of all the equipment and devices police officers carry, their mouth is the most important as they have to use great communication skills to be able to help people. They use their verbal skills more than any other piece of equipment they carry.
Seeing the inside of the police truck and listening to the siren was definitely the highlight of the morning for the students.
We are all grateful for the important job that our WA police officers do in our community, and we thank Constable Kruger for coming in today.

What sport means to me and my future goals:
Soccer is a great way for me to get away from the crazy world and concentrate on something that really gives me the opportunity to fulfil a passion to reach my next level. Sport is a way to relieve stress and helps me to work hard to be the best I can be. Sport helps me to interact with new people, it creates different connections with them and builds strong friendships through hard work. My future goals are to make it as a professional Football player, playing for a professional club and develop myself to the best I can be as a player and person. My mottos in life are – “Respect is earned, not for free” and “Never give up”

Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO)
Our OzCLO students did exceptionally well this year. We had 64 students from Years 9-12 competing to decipher and translate codes from all over the world. Well done to our students who took on the challenge!
We are very proud of Year 11 students Esther, Harry, Josh, and Venetia, who won the State Senior Division. They were invited to represent Western Australia in the National Competition and received a silver certificate.
da Vinci Decathlon
The da Vinci Decathlon is a very challenging and prestigious competition in which our students had to complete complex tasks in 10 different subject areas, namely Science, Mathematics, English, Art and Poetry, Engineering, Drama, Ideation, Cartography, Codebreaking and General Knowledge. Many top schools in Perth attended this competition at the University of Western Australia.
The Year 7 team came 1st in the Art and Poetry category, 2nd in Codebreaking, and 3rd in General Knowledge.
The Year 8 team came 1st in Art and Poetry and 3rd in Codebreaking.
The Year 9 team placed 3rd in the General Knowledge category.
The Year 10 team placed 2nd in Art and Poetry and 3rd in Engineering.
We are very pleased with the great effort by these students.

Secondary Mothers Day Breakfast

The Starlight Children’s Foundation aims to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families. Batavia and Arcadia Houses have again been working together to support this worthy cause, raising funds through a lunchtime bake sale at the end of last term and a Starlight Day event this term.
On Starlight Day, students could make a donation to go uniform free, enter a jellybean jar guessing competition and enjoy a sausage sizzle. 'Dunk the teacher’ raffle tickets could also be purchased for a chance to throw a bucket of water on one of a variety of ‘willing’ staff! There was a real carnival atmosphere in the quadrangle during the event supported by the senior music students providing live music, Mr Harris acting as MC on the microphone and a huge and enthusiastic crowd gathering to enjoy the ceremonial soaking of a dozen different teachers (I can personally confirm the water was very cold!).
Thank you to the many students who got involved in supporting, planning, promoting and running the event, particularly the Batavia and Arcadia House Councils. The aim was to raise over $2000 and we are very pleased to announce that a total of $2209 was raised for the Starlight Children’s Foundation – well done everyone!
