Dear parents and students,
New Carpark and Access Road
As indicated in the last edition of the LJBC Newsletter, the Sports Centre Access Road development is nearing completion, and I am now in a position to provide you with an update on the details of how the new access road will operate and the specific timeline.
It has been very exciting to see our project progressing well to completion, with the following information designed to provide useful information on the College Community use of this valuable asset, which I will address by using the Frequently Asked Questions format.
1. When will the new access road be in operation?
The planned first day of operation of the new access road and parking system is Tuesday 18 June.
2. What will the Carparks be called?
The Shenton Avenue Carpark will be identified as the ‘Gold Carpark’, with the new Sports Centre Carpark identified as the ‘Blue Carpark’. There will also be allocated ‘Green’ and ‘Red’ zones for staff parking.
3. Who can use the new access road and carpark?
Colour coded parking permits will be issued to each College family, based on the year level/s of your students. Only Parents with primary students will be able to access these two car parks, with the youngest sibling determining which park is allocated to the family. Parents who only have secondary students will not be able to use the Gold or Blue Car Parks during pick up and drop off time on school days. The new ‘Blue Carpark’ will CLOSED for parent access from 8:50 am and opening again at 2:45pm each day.
4. When will parking permits be issued?
Parents can expect to receive their family permit between Monday 10 June and Wednesday 12 June.
5. How will I know where to go?
Further details will be available around the same time as the issuing of the permits, via the College Website and direct email. This information will include maps and general traffic flow instructions. Initially, there will be a strong staff presence in the carparks to help with directions, traffic flow and general queries.
6. Will there be a ‘Drop Off’ and ‘Pick Up’ zone in the new ‘Blue Carpark’?
A drop-off and pick up zone has been identified at the front doors of the Sports Centre. Please make your way to this area where a duty staff member will assist you with your requirements.
7. How can I exit the access road via Kennedya Drive?
There will not be a road connection between the carparks, therefore if entering via Kennedya Drive, you will also exit via Kennedya Drive. Like-wise for Shenton Avenue. When exiting via Kennedya Drive, you will be required to turn left only along Kennedya Drive, making your way to the roundabout to U-turn and travel towards Lake Joondalup Drive or continue through to Moore Drive to exit. There is NO right hand turn when coming out of the new access road onto Kennedya Drive.
8. Is there going to be an opportunity to provide feedback and/or make suggestions?
Of course we expect some ‘teething’ challenges and we value and appreciate your feedback and suggestions. We will also be making our own observations and in line with the ‘collective wisdom’ will formulate well considered adjustments to the traffic flow and parking arrangements. We intend to allow the initial system to operate through to the end of the Term 2 (for 3 weeks), formulate any adjustments and then communicate to the parent community prior to the start of Term 3.
9. What do I do if I do not receive my parking permit or if I wish to apply for a change of allocated carpark?
If you have a Primary age student and have not received a parking permit and information by close of business Wednesday 12 June, please contact the Primary School Reception Staff who will help you to be ready for parking on Tuesday 18 June. If you have extenuating circumstances which need to be considered regarding your allocated parking arrangements, please contact the Primary School Reception Staff and they will process your request. It is most likely that this will take 48 hours to turn around.
10. What happens if I have particular circumstances which require closer access, such as a child with an injury?
If you have an injured child or related/similar situation, please proceed to the best access point for your circumstances (regardless of your allocated permit) and communicate as needed with the staff member on duty. Arrangements can also then be made via the Primary School Reception Staff for the duration of your situation.
11. Is there a plan for the Secondary drop off and pick up areas?
There will be more parks available in the College carpark near the Western Oval, with some adjustments to traffic flow to be announced prior to the end of Term 2 in preparation for the beginning of Term 3.
As stated previously, we have been in consultation with Traffic Engineers and the City of Joondalup regarding the efficient use of this new commodity, to ensure the most effective use of the access now available while ensuring maximum safety for drivers and pedestrians. Also, during this process, we have been fully briefed regarding Council compliance and procedure requirements regarding public parking on private land within the City of Joondalup.
We ask the College Community to be patient in these initial stages of operation as we all familiarise ourselves with the usage procedures, so we can ensure we meet our obligations and maximise efficient, safe traffic flow around our College for all.
During the first month of operation we will be recording observations of challenges, bottlenecks and possible adjustments to the traffic flow plan, and in light of this data consider adjustments to the plan, with appropriate communication to the College Community.
We thank you in advance for your patience, cooperation and understanding as we implement this new traffic flow system and look forward to assisting you any way we can in providing an efficient, safe, clear and effective student drop off and pick up process.

National Simultaneous Storytime in the Primary School

National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, and many other places around the country.
On Wednesday 22 May students at LJBC came together to listen to the colourful, vibrant, fun book Alpacas with Maracas, by Matt Cosgrove. The aim is to promote the value of reading and literacy and Australian authors and publishers. The students participated in some fun classroom activities after the story.

In week 4 the students in Year 6 held a Night of the Notable. The Night of the Notables is an extended project covering both the English and HaSS subject areas. The Year 6 students had to thoroughly research and present a notable person, in character, to their friends and family. How they chose to present their research was left to them. It was a fantastically successful event and enjoyed by everyone who came!

Year 10 Drama Production – Girl Who Cried Wolf

On Wednesday 15 May, the Year 10 Drama class performed Girl Who Cried Wolf by Australian playwright Angela Betzien. As part of this production, the students worked to apply voice and movement techniques taught in class to their individual characters as well as the role in the ensemble.
Based on a true story about a girl who faked her own abduction, the play follows Laura Black, a habitual fibber and Catriona Dijon, most popular student at Pleasant Lakes Primary School, who create a web of lies that ends seeing Laura’s dad accused of a crime she made up.
The students really enjoyed workshopping their scenes and exploring the lives of Laura and Catriona. Adding the technical elements of lighting and sound helped bring the production to life together with adding those sequined costumes for the dance number! Well done to the class for pulling together, supporting each other through the rehearsal process and entertaining their audience! The students had a ball performing to their friends and family.
We're looking forward to working on the Valedictory Play in Term 4 to celebrate the Graduating Class of 2019.

In Term 1, we held the annual LJBC Photography Competition. There were new categories this year including Landscape, Portrait, Sports, Travel and Food Photography.

We had many great entries, showing there are some very talented photographers at our school, making the competition extremely difficult to judge. One student from each category and year group was selected to be commended on their entry. The winners demonstrated exceptional technical skill, sophistication and professionalism in photography and design.
Congratulations to all students who entered such impressive photographs!

On Wednesday 29 May, both of the Year 9 Media classes went on an excursion to Whiteman Park. This was an opportunity for the students to film ‘on location.’ Students worked in groups to develop ideas for suspense films and the park’s variety of areas allowed our budding filmmakers to select settings that suited their narratives. Tasked with using suspense techniques such as parallel editing and vertigo shots, our future Hitchcocks and Spielbergs had a lot of creative fun on the outing.

Head of Learning – The Arts
Year 7 and 8 Applied Design students this term have been completing numerous projects. The first project was themed by Aboriginal culture and art to create a Key tag using the Turbo CAD program and the Laser cutter.

The second project involved students working in pairs and creating their own catapult. The students learned about inertia, projectile motion, payload etc…and also researched the origins of various catapults before designing and creating their own. Students have developed an understanding of Turbo CAD and the use of the laser cutter to complete this activity and were then given the opportunity to test their catapults distance.
For the final project students are completing an insect design and create task. This involves developing an understanding of 3D printers, the significance insects will have on the world food shortage and developing computer skills using 123D Design. Students will be given the opportunity to 3D print their insect design.

da Vinci Decathlon
The da Vinci Decathlon is a very challenging and prestigious competition in which our students had to complete complex tasks in 10 different subject areas, namely Science, Mathematics, English, Art and Poetry, Engineering, Drama, Ideation, Cartography, Codebreaking and General Knowledge. Top schools in Perth attended this competition at the University of Western Australia and for the first time in our College’s history, we won the Year 9/10 competition. These students have now been invited by Knox Grammar School to participate in the national competition in Sydney in June.
Congratulations to Jake Battle, Grace Kelly, Jake Mawson, Isobel Millward, Emily Penhale, Lunae Pienaar, Phillip Potgieter and Esther Ward on this outstanding achievement.
Our Year 8 team seems to be following in the seniors’ footsteps. They also did exceptionally well and finished 2nd in the Year 8 competition and we will definitely see more excellent results from this talented group of students in the future.
Team members are: Amber Evans, Jade Evans, Gabrielle Hawkes, Riley Jackson, Daniel Lummis, Chelsea McAuliffe, Leo McGill and Lillian Walker.
We are also very proud of our Year 7 team consisting of Zac Anstey, Alex Bogdanich, Connor Brown, Jess Kimber Nate King, Natalia Rodrigues, Francois Vermaak and Benjamin Ward who excelled in the Mathematics, English and General Knowledge competitions.
Crisis Point
Two of our Year 10 students, Hukambir Kohli and Jennifer Gamble represented the College in the UN Youth’s Crisis Point competition. Crisis Point is a crisis simulation competition where students attempt to solve a pertinent security threat facing the world today through diplomacy, negotiation, and compromise. It puts you into the shoes of real-world figures from the United States cabinets that respond to the highest level of security threats.
Jenny assumed the role of National Director of Intelligence and her role was to work within the National Executive Community, specifically with the president, to manage and control the other departments or cabinets. Hukam was the Undersecretary for Economic Growth and his role was to work within the State Department to manage the international relations of America.
Both students thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity and found it very valuable for their personal growth:
“Through the Crisis Point activity, we have achieved an insight into the reality of what it is like for a government to come face to face with a crisis and what they can do to resolve it. We have gained important diplomacy and negotiation skills in order to attain a common ground to achieve what we set out to do. We also had the opportunity to become friends with people that we would never have talked to.” - Hukambir Kohli and Jennifer Gamble

This year, LJBC will be introducing a new sports initiative called the LJBC Lions. In line with this, the LJBC Lions is looking for a new visual identity and needs your help. We are seeking students who can design a creative, innovative and professional logo design. The logo should be recognisable and help promote our organisations mission - ‘To engage students in a high quality team based sporting program - to increase participation - to move them closer to representative and elite sport - to provide sporting career pathways and to shape the student as a whole, by instilling values such as commitment and resilience. The LJBC Lions theme is based on respect and honour.’
Please read below for more details regarding logo design, contest rules & submission requirements.

Cumberland House is blessed with students gifted with unique talents and some of these were evidenced in the last fortnight.
We had an outstanding level of participation in the Inter House Cross Country Competition this year and we gained a very respectable third position. Well done to you all and congratulations to our medal winners:
1st Place Winners Dylan Morrison, Benjamin Niles, Jordan Gloster
2nd Place Winners Lauren Bell, Luke Morrison
3rd Place Winners Harry Dean, Eliza Shepperd
These students went on to compete in the ACC Cross Country Carnival. Out of 350 competitors in each division, Jordan Gloster came 15th in the Under 16 Girls and Dylan Morrison came 23rd in the Under 16 Boys. This is a brilliant effort from both of them.
Cumberland students were recently treated with special performances from some of our Year 9 and Year 11 students during our House Assembly meetings. A big thankyou to Caitlin Mathews Markey, Ruby Haycraft and Venetia Edwards for sharing their musical talents with us.
Some of our students also have a gift in photography. Congratulations to Catherine Nelson for winning the Year 12 section of the LJBC Term 1 Photography Competition.
Our Student Councilors are working hard behind the scenes and treated our lower school students with a pancake breakfast. We had many enthusiastic cooks, quality control may have been a little lapse at times, however the pancakes were well received.
This year Cumberland and James Houses are joining forces to support Food Bank. We currently have a can drive and the cans are rolling into the House Centre. We will also be hosting a Market Day, Free Dress Day and a Sausage Sizzle later in the term. I encourage our Cumberland families to get on board in support of this great cause.

James/Cumberland Sustainability and Awareness Project
Recycling is one of the best ways for individuals to have a positive impact on the world in which we live. According to statistics, Australia is one of the countries that generate the highest waste amounts in the world and waste materials that are not recycled, end up in already densely packed landfills.
Sustainability needs to be taken seriously by everyone and we all need to do our bit, whether it is by using a recycling bin or being more environmentally conscious. Every bit makes a difference and as small as it may seem, it can help to preserve our earth.
Last year, James House and Cumberland House joined forces in raising funds to purchase recycling bins for the Secondary school and encourage students to do their part in contributing to an environmentally friendly environment. Ten bins have been purchased; and adorned with bright stickers and information about acceptable commingle recycle waste; is now placed around our campus for use.
Thank you to every student who supported this very important and worthy cause!

On Friday 31May, twenty-two Year 10 students went to Perth City to shake tins and collect for Water for Africa. All together students collected $892. This money will go towards installing, maintaining and repairing water projects in remote communities in Africa. Statistics say that 663,000,000 people in the world lack access to clean drinking water. The funds students raised will contribute to supplying clean drinking water to African villages which provides the opportunity to improve lives through better health, sanitation and increased education attendance. Water for Africa also establishes a sustainable program where they empower, train and employ local people to fix broken water wells and benefit the community. Water for Africa works with the local church to see long lasting change for the communities who have received safe clean drinking water and heard the gospel. At each water well, they invite the local pastor or church leader to attend and pray. Bringing hope and change to individuals over generations.

Collegian (past student) Zia Van Aswegen a legal eagle, with a passion for travelling!
How did you reach your decision to study your chosen field?
- I am currently completing a double degree in Law (LLB) and Finance (BCom)
- I knew that I wanted to study law pretty early in high school. I enjoyed being part of the debating team as well as the school’s mock trial team. I was very attracted to researching and forming analytical arguments and thought I would enjoy doing it as a degree.
- I later decided to complete a degree in finance as well to diversify my skills.
What is your favourite LJBC memory?
- Being apart of all the extra-curriculars the school has to offer, such as academic competitions, tours and drama productions!
If you could give advice to current students, what would that be?
- If you can, take a gap year (or 6 months) and go travelling overseas. Either prior to commencing further studies or at some point throughout your degree.
- I was able to go travelling for a portion of my fourth year, but always wish I had done it sooner as it was an amazing experience and changes your perspective immensely!
In addition to attending LJBC, did you have a part time job or volunteered?
- Yes, I worked casually as a netball umpire and umpire coach throughout Years 11-12.
Have you won, or was a finalist, for any awards or scholarships since leaving LJBC?
- Murdoch Scholarship for the Most Outstanding Mock Trial Student (2013)
(Direct entry into Murdoch School of Law; Sponsored international mooting competition of choice)
- Finalist in International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot competition (2015)
- Finalist in Australian Law Students’ Association Client Interview Competition (2016)
- Murdoch Law School Macerata Exchange Program Scholarship (study abroad in Italy) (2017)
Do you have any special interests or hobbies?
- Travelling! I love travelling and seeing new places and getting to know different cultures! I was lucky enough to be able to incorporate some overseas travelling into my fourth and fifth years of university and have seen some amazing places.
- So far the countries I have visited includes Japan, Thailand, Bali, Italy, England, Scotland, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
- I also enjoy learning new languages, which helps me when travelling.

2019 National Conference for Executive Assistants
Our Executive Assistant to the Principal, Dale Emery, was recently invited to speak at the 2019 National Conference for Executive Assistants/Personal Assistants to Principals, Heads of School and Senior Executives in Schools held in Melbourne from 30-31 May 2019.
Dale and College Principal, Mr Pollard, presented as a Team of Two, sharing the LJBC systems, structure, expectations and rewards with the delegates from schools across Australia and New Zealand.
"It was an amazing honour and privilege to be asked to speak recognising my 20 years' experience and knowledge as an EA across a range of sectors" - Dale Emery
Photographs for all LJBC students will take place on Thursday 27 June, Friday 28 June and Wednesday 3 July 2019.
Every student will receive an individual order form/envelope (including a letter for Parents/Guardians) in the near future, which gives instructions on how to order copies of the photographs. If your child does not pass on their envelope to you, please ask them as it may be sitting in their bag. Primary students are asked to return their envelopes to their Class Teacher prior to the Photo Days. Secondary students are asked to bring their envelopes with them on the day of their photo.
Sibling photographs will once again be taken before school from 7.30 – 8.30am on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 June. This will enable parents to drop their children off in the Auditorium early on whatever day best suits their schedules. Parents of Primary aged students are welcome to accompany their children however if you are unable to stay, appropriate supervision will be provided.
In preparation for the photos, parents and students are asked to check winter uniforms to ensure that blazers have all the buttons sewn on, girls’ skirts are the correct length, and stockings are the correct colour and denier. Primary students are required to wear their blue jumpers (no sports uniform).
Please note we have organised for Photo Hendriks to return to the College on Wednesday 3 July to take individual photos of any students who were absent, however, these students will be marked as absent in their class/connect photo. K.2 will however have their class photos taken on this day.
The full photo day schedule is attached for your information. If you have any questions regarding photographs, you are most welcome to contact me, via College Reception, on 9300 9466, or by email Events@ljbc.wa.edu.au
