Every Friday this term, a group of Year 5 students have met together to research and discuss how they will build and design a Bush Tucker Garden. We started with the problem of what to do with an empty space – a lonely sand square near the Upper Primary playground. We decided to make this garden because we think it would be a good space for students to learn more and connect to Aboriginal culture and sustainable land use. We also thought it would be a great place to visit at recess and lunch as well as a relaxing space close to nature if students need some quiet time.
We have researched Noongar seasons and types of bush tucker. We have made scale drawings and come up with garden designs. We have also prepared presentations and contributed to writing proposals for local grants. We will start building and adding things to the space in Term 3. The things we will be adding will include native plants and bush tucker plants. We will also include some sensory items like windchimes, made out of recycled materials.
We all hope that you agree with us that this will be an amazing improvement to the school. We have tried to include as many things related to nature and aboriginal culture (the original owners of this land) into our designs. Hope you like the final result of the garden!

We are very excited to embark on the bush tucker project, to build a beautiful space in an under-utilised area of our school but more importantly, to create a space where students can immerse themselves in the natural environment and Aboriginal culture. We value Aboriginal People, knowledge and traditions, and it is our wish to connect and reflect their culture here at our school. We acknowledge we are on Mooro country of the Noongar people and that First Nations People past and present have invaluable knowledge about this land that we can learn from. We hope this bush tucker garden will provide one way in which we can do this.
We are thrilled to announce that the school has been awarded two grants to assist with this bush tucker project! The Woolworths Junior Landcare grant will provide the school with funds to contribute to tucker bush plants. The second grant, The PALS project, has been awarded to the school to fund Aboriginal art within the garden space. We have met with local Noongar artists and are busy finalising the design for the garden. The primary school students will be involved in some of the processes of implementing the garden and participating in Bush Tucker workshops to provide hands on learning.
We look forward to keeping you updated on the project as it evolves!

Constable Care Fun-Scary incursion

On Wednesday, Kindergarten to Year 3 students enjoyed a visit from Constable Care, along with Timmy, Teagan, Grandma and Sarge, the dog. This puppet show complemented the Protective Behaviours Health Program we revisit each year, for children to practise identifying comfortable and uncomfortable feelings and practising using strategies for when feeling unsafe.
We were proud of the ideas the students shared during question time, giving appropriate responses for differentiating between fun-scary and bad-scary scenarios, nominating physical warning signs and discerning when to seek help from their trusted network.
Some of the show’s enjoyment is captured here in the photographs.
Pre Primary Team
8 years ago LJBC Primary started the first session of the ‘Fitness Club’. They were meagre beginnings with 12 students entering the pool which shot to 18 students in the second term.
Back then for breakfast, we had cereal and toast - Oh how things have changed…
This term we had 100 students in the running squads and the ‘Couch to Five K’ team and the breakfast has climbed the lofty heights to a bacon and egg roll with a side of sausage, yoghurt and fresh fruit.
It’s a great way to start the day, but would be impossible without the parents who joyfully cook at the Barbeques, thank you!
Many thanks go to the teachers who assist, namely, Mr Cooke, Mr Thompson and Miss Chikich and of course the lovely Mrs Gloster who tirelessly works on the admin behind the scenes.
We also moved into A division at Cross country…. Just saying!

This term, our Year 6 students took part in a Judo demonstration by Kano Judo Schools as part of their Japanese learning at LJBC. This incursion allowed students to learn about this traditional Japanese sport which certainly complemented their learning of sports this semester.
Carlo Sensei & his son Calvin, gave our students a wonderful and educational demonstration of Judo which all students thoroughly enjoyed. Students were able to take part in a variety of Judo moves such as holds and throws. They also learned about the different belts of Judo and that only a person that is 18 years of age and over is able to get a 'black' belt.
Also, students learned that after Soccer, it is in fact Judo that is the next most popular sport around the world.
Thank you to Kano Judo Schools for such a wonderful day!
Burkett Sensei

The Primary Library ran the LJBC Lego Masters Competition again this year. The students were very creative and they challenged themselves to build some interesting things. The golden brick is eagerly sought after and each week the judging becomes more challenging. The weekly challenges were as follows:
Week 1 – Anything that moves
Week 2 – Space
Week 3 – Creatures
Week 4 – My Dream House
Week 5 – A mosaic picture using flat bricks.
This year we had a few entries from keen parents who are avid Lego builders. Perhaps one of our LJ families will be seen on Channel 9 participating in the competition.

On Friday 18 June, LJBC kicked off the 2021 Northern Schools Rugby Conference (NSRC) with the annual pre-season Rugby Sevens Night carnival.
With around 250-300 people attending, the event was an amazing success, showcasing youth Rugby talent from across the northern schools' Rugby community. Our LJBC boys’ teams were competitive though out the night with some courageous victories and some narrow defeats.
LJBC’s first-ever Girls Sevens team exceeded all expectations. The team were outstanding with a clean sweep of the competition. Our girls were brave and resilient in their on-field performances, gaining a great deal of confidence leading into the Term 3 ‘Home and Away’ competition.
We would like to thank our Community Rugby affiliates, Joondalup Brothers and Rugby WA, for their unwavering support of the LJBC Rugby Union Program. A huge thank you to the following Brothers coaches and Premier Grade players for their contribution to our Rugby teams; Mr Lachy Wood - U7 Brothers coach, Connor McDougall - Brothers U21 Colts coach and ex LJBC student and ex-students Taane-Nui Phillips and George Peters - Brothers Premier Grade players. We would also like to thank Mr Dane Lazarus, Mr Damian Wainohu and the other Rugby WA community development officers for their contributions on the night and throughout the semester.
Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the LJBC staff for their support, throughout the term and on the night. Thank you to all staff who braved the cold to attend the event and a special thank you to our College Principal Mr Sonneman-Smith, who watched every LJBC team warm up and play. His overwhelming support of LJBC Rugby is greatly appreciated.

Year 7 Circus incursion

Roll up! Roll up! On Wednesday 16 June, the circus came to Founders Hall! Clint from Circus Challenge, otherwise known as ‘the circus man,’ visited our Year 7 Drama students for a specialist incursion. We spent two hours learning circus tricks! Students had a so much fun plate spinning, juggling, ‘fire’ twirling, diabolo throwing and balancing!

During the first semester, LJBC nominated 30 teams to compete in the ACC CAS co-curricular sporting competition against other coastal Colleges. It was outstanding to see close to 300 students commit to this competition and represent the College in a fun and competitive environment. Several of our Year 6 students were able to supplement our Year 7 teams this term. They are commended for their contribution to this program and we are looking forward to seeing them excel in 2022.
Numerous teams placed highly throughout the semester and developed their skills in their chosen sport. Thanks to all our student managers and officials for their assistance, it was great to see you develop your leadership and communication skills whilst building a positive sporting culture at the College.
Congratulations to our Senior Boys Volleyball team and Year 7 Boys Soccer team who finished on top of the CAS ladder after the final round of competition to secure a home final. I am also pleased to announce that both teams won their final matches and the ACC pennant. All ‘Most Valuable Players’ and ‘Coaches Awards’ for all teams will be formally recognised at the Sports Awards Evening on Friday 12 November.

Year 11 General Integrated Science

This Semester in the General Integrated Science Course, the students worked very hard maintaining all the current aquaponic systems in the Science garden. They were measuring the water parameters, harvesting and planting new seedlings as well as keeping the weeds under control.
Through this course, students not only studied the interaction of the biotic and abiotic in re-circulating aquaponics system, but also learned about the technical side of a continuous flow re-circulating aquaponic system. Students designed, sourced and cost materials, and then finally constructed their chosen design in teams. Congratulations Year 11 Integrated Science students on amazing designs, and excellency executed. I am very proud of you!

LJBC shows heart with another ‘CAN DO’ effort

Before COVID-19, food insecurity was a daily reality for tens of thousands of West Australians. However, the pandemic has caused further strain on many individuals with reports finding that in 2020, 31% of food insecure Australians were accessing food relief at least once a week as opposed to the 15% in 2019.
This year, James House and Cumberland House once again decided to support the Foodbank, driving a Secondary School can-drive and raising funds with a Market Day. Thanks to a fantastic team effort, students greatly surpassed our goal with an astounding 1360 non-perishable cans PLUS raised $1550 to donate - what a fantastic testimony to the LJBC community's giving nature.
A shout-out to Mrs Keen’s 7B1 Connect class for raising the most cans. A special thanks also to the James and Cumberland Student Councillors who drove this campaign and proved that wherever there is a human in need, there is an opportunity for kindness and to make a difference.
Thank you to every student and staff member who supported this very important and worthy cause!

Our Year 7-12 Cross Country team recently participated in the ACC Cross Country at Perry Lakes Reserve. Students from 84 ACC affiliated schools across Western Australia attended the event to represent their schools.
Although many students were unable to attend due to injury, we had 62 athletes compete on the day. It was pleasing to see the majority of our year groups with maximum numbers of 6 males and 6 females and our senior students commit to the competition by travelling to the event after attending their classes in the morning.
Our U/13 girls were the first to race with our girls setting the competitive bar for the day. Kiera and Nicola ran an outstanding race to place 2nd and 5th respectively in their race. Other impressive performances came from Ben 2nd, James 3rd and Matthew 7th in the U/14 boys. Luke added to his impressive results in 2021 by placing 2nd in the U/16 boys and Tayla ran well to finish 6th in the Senior Girls race.
The sun continued to shine and Lake Joondalup Baptist College continued to place well in each race contributing to our consistent performances throughout the competition. At the end of the day, LJBC won shields for the U/14 Champion Team, Senior Girls Champion Team and finished 9th overall for the day.
Congratulations to our All Stars nominees; Kiera, Nicola, Ben, James and Luke who will be formally recognised at the Sports Awards Evening on Friday 12 November.

And just like that, Semester 1 has flown by! We can however, look back with gratitude on the last few months as we were able to return back to ‘normal’ and enjoy a semester largely unaffected by the impact of COVID. How blessed are we! Our thoughts and prayers remain with our James families who have been unable to visit their loved ones either interstate or overseas, and are concerned for their health and wellbeing.
Our James students excelled in various areas this term and I wish to congratulate the following students on their achievements: Rylee (Year 12) and Samuel (Year 7) for their participation at the Australian Gymnastics Championships on the Gold Coast; Tayla (Year 11), Matthew (Year 8) and Izabella (Year 11), who represented LJBC at the State Cross Country Championships and Levi (Year 7) who was selected for the U/12 Football State Team. Fantastic achievements and a testimony of all the hard work, perseverance and sacrifice demonstrated by these students!
College Half Colours were also awarded to Emma (Cultural), Carrie (Service) and Jared (Service) and College Full Colours to Grace (Culture and Curriculum), Hukambir (Curriculum), Rylee (Cultural) and Tayla (Sport and Service) this semester. Well done to these students on this amazing recognition of all their hard work!
I also wish to extend another warm welcome to the following students who joined the James House family this term: Isaac (Year 10), Aimee (Year 10) and Cedric (Year 7). It has been lovely getting to know you and I look forward to sharing many memories in the years ahead.
I wish to inform you that I will be away on Long Service Leave during Term 3. Mrs Kendal Sallery will fill in for me during this time. If you have any concerns regarding your child next term, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Sallery or Mrs Helen Del Frate, Dean of Students.
I wish the Year 12 James students the best of luck with their final term. Continue to work hard but also take a moment to enjoy these final weeks – you have worked hard for it and will never get it back. I look forward to celebrating with you at our Valedictory Dinner and Graduation.
Wishing you all a well-deserved holiday.
Best wishes

We have reached the end of Semester 1, and to think back just a year ago when we had to push through a huge character-building exercise called Covid-19, as we again adjust to the newest announcements. Well done Arcadia House on the resilience you are showing. Having an 11 Week Term in itself is a huge challenge, but we are very close to a well-deserved holiday break. I have no doubt in my mind, that even if you have to change your holiday plans, you will take it in your stride and improvise.
Thank you to all the Year 8 and 9 students who participated in the Wii games both last term and this term, you have done us proud. We are looking forward to cheering on our Year 7 teams in Term 3 to finish off the battle. Best of luck to our Chess participants who are also battling it out next term.
The Athletics Carnival is happening in Term 3 with the pre-carnival events,1500m and 800m long-distance events, during Connect in Weeks 2 and 3. Arcadia, make sure you participate and bring the point’s home!
Congratulations again to all our Arcadians who have achieved so well in their external events outside of school. We are proud of you and celebrating with you too!
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful and safe holiday break. May you rest well and come back full of energy to take on a new Term.
We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties. Oswald Chambers
Enjoy your holidays, stay safe and rest well.
God Bless!

Our annual Year 12 Wellbeing Day provides an opportunity for our graduating students to engage in workshops and activities to further prepare them for adult life and to have fun along the way. Unfortunately, due to the snap lockdown, our Year 12 Wellbeing Day didn’t quite go to plan. Nevertheless, for those who were in attendance, a modified Wellbeing Day went ahead.
Pastor Aaron Bradfield from Lake Joondalup Baptist Church briefed our students on key components that contribute to a resilient lived life. He showed how being solid yet flexible, calm in your thinking, and grounded in your emotions can build resilience. In such uncertain circumstances, we were thankful for such a relevant message as our students enter a season of greater independence.
While the remainder of the planned workshops and amusement activities could not go ahead, we made sure the students were treated to a delicious lunch prepared by the Year 11 Hospitality Students.
We wish all our Year 12 students a peaceful school break before they return for their final term at Lake Joondalup Baptist College.

Chlea-Jades’ journey with Judo began in 2017 when she attended a Judo kids party at Kano Judo Schools in Joondalup with her 7 year old brother. Fast forward to 2019 and she was chosen to compete at the National Judo Championships after winning gold at the WA State Championships. Unfortunately, breaking her leg on her birthday whilst playing soccer at school shattered that plan and 2020 saw the same event cancelled due to Covid-19. Finally, in 2021, Chlea-Jade was able to travel to the Gold Coast but would have to compete against older fighters in unfamiliar territory. She was determined to be fierce and do her best and earned a silver medal, ranking her #2 in Australia. Next year she will be competing in the same age category again and hopes to go that one better - Gold. Well done Chlea-Jade! We look forward to watching you compete at the highest level.
